I am just curious to see what other barefoot runners use while running outdoors to protect their eyes. I usually run with a sunvisor but have been looking at investing in some good sunglasses like a pair from Rudy Project.

I'm a little nervous about wearing sunglasses while running barefoot because I'm afraid that it will prevent me from clearly seeing and properly avoiding stepping on road debris like glass that I normally can spot with my naked eyes. So I'm just trying to figure out if wearing sunglasses is really the best and safest option for a barefoot runner.

If you do run barefoot with sunglasses please tell me the specifics of them such as are the lens photochromatic, polarized, neutral lens, contrast lens, lens color, brand, etc.... Or if you think sunglasses suck and I should just stick to my sunvisor, then let me know.

Thanks!

I run barefoot with cheap

I run barefoot with cheap driving sunglasses right now but I've run in any number of types without a noticable difference except for a pair that had a mirror finish. This pair had so much glare that I did have problems seeing detail. Just find a pair you like that blocks the sun and go for it. If they are fairly well made they will reduce glare but still allow you to see perfectly.

On a side note it really depends on what time of day and where I am wether I were sun glasses at all. There are times when I'm on a trail that the sunlight filtering through the trees causes some major vision issues. Running from shade to a bright patch of light and then back to shade really messes with my eyes. At those times I just take them off as they arent helping anything.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt as I am horribly near sited and wear glasses or contacts when ever I'm awake to even see at all. I may just be more used to not seeing everything =)

Hi Freeurfeet,Gee I can

Hi Freeurfeet,

Gee I can hardly imagine not wearing sunglasses when I run (unless it is dark of course). I just use some cheap safety glasses, cost me all of $10 but they are UV filtered.

The sun is very bright here in Australia and it gets so hot sometimes your eyeballs feel like they are about to melt, sunglasses are good because they make you feel cooler because they darken the scene and allow me to see debris in front while I'm runnning.

I wouldn't worry about expensive sporty glasses as you are only going to sweat all over them and most of them are just overpriced fashion statements. Go for safety glasses, funny thing is they are often made by the same company that also sells the fashion ones at about 10 times the cost.

I always opt for the hat...rarely ever wear sunglasses except a handful of times a year while driving or at the beach.

A few years ago I was kinda addicted to wearing sunglasses and kept breaking or losing them...I got tired of spending money on them and went without for awhile and forgot about them for 2 years. I finally bought another pair just for driving and once in while on the beach. I like wearing a hat or visor much better for running...its more about what you are used to wearing....and its plenty sunny where I live.

I wear both in the summer. A pair of polarized Ryders glasses (not cute but functional) and a white ball cap. Sometimes I when I'm running on a shady trail I take the glasses off and stick them on the top of my hat, but they stay on when running in sun. I hate squinting.

I always wear sunglasses (and sometimes a hat). Yes, sunglasses probably aren't the best solution, especially at dusk. I have a cheap pair Iron Man sunglasses, and I think they are polarized.

I used to wear sunglasses all

I used to wear sunglasses all the time while running, but have since stopped wearing them. Mostly because any pair I tried to wear caused sweat to eventually go into my eyes or just run down the lenses causing me to not be able to see at all. I like being able to wipe the sweat away from my forehead without having to worry about smearing sweat across the lenses. I now wear sunglasses only when biking. I live in Taiwan where it is always hot and sunny, my eyes have gotten use to it.

Forgot to mention that I only wear a hat when it is pouring rain out, especially during a typhoon, so I can see where I am going.

I wear polarized sunglasses. I feel they make me look cooler.

And that is important.

And that is important. ;-)

I always wear a visor during my runs.. The sunglasses go with me too but I take them off when the road debris starts 'coming at me from nowhere'. I prefer cheap sunglasses that have polarized, lightly tinted lenses with a brownish hue (never the green ones) and frames that minimise the amount of sun that can get in from above. My current pair was bought at Target, probably about 3 years ago and, I bought a 2nd pair of the same ones, to have in case I happen to lose the first pair. Each of those cost me $15. Sunglasses are easy to lose so, I would never pay more than $20 per pair.

I always wear sunglasses and a hat. I have prescription lenses (bifocals even!) and they are polarized. so far the only time I've accidentally stepped on them was when I didn't have my glasses on and the sun came out and I was blinded by the light, LOL.

Unfortunately mine often have sweat running down the lenses and I have to clean them off after every run because of the grime. If I could see without them, I wouldn't wear them, cool factor aside. ;-)

I have a polarized pair of sunglasses with pink lenses. They seem to make things on the ground appear brighter.

wearing cheap glasses from

wearing cheap glasses from REI right now, but might stop, last run I had face chaffing where the bottom of the lens was rubbing my face ( I think that's what happened). might try to switch over to hats, I know some golfers that wore only ballcaps and got skin cancer on their ears, so I want a full head brim. might use my bucket hat I use for hiking, but I'm not sure I want the extra funk and stains... need to find something that breathes well... and suggestions?=) maybe like this?

I've added it for you. If it's an image already on the net somewhere, I just right click, copy & paste.

I do like your hat though. Looks very cooling and comfortable. And washable too, I imagine.
