We all know you're a dumbass,

We all know you're a dumbass, Jason. You don't have to publicize it. :)

Seriously, excellent writing

Seriously, excellent writing once again, Jason. I can't wait to read parts 2 - 4.

Good idea, Zum.  We should

Good idea, Zum. We should all four parts up there, when they get released.

nice article..  but umm....

nice article.. but umm.... clothing is NOT an option for some of us due to physical discomfort without it.. says the woman who once ran a marathon with an ace bandage wrapped around her chest due to lost luggage and lack of a sportsbra!

This guy is obviously crazy.

This guy is obviously crazy.

Nice work Jason

Nice work Jason

Competitor mag seems to like having articles that cover both side of the debate.

So here is my prediction, following Jasons writings there will be a counter story to feed the flames.

Ditto to that TJ. Looking

Ditto to that TJ. Looking forward to what's to come...

Well written LPJ!  I have no

Well written LPJ! I have no criticism to offer on my own behalf, though I suppose that BF Ken Bob might grind his teeth to see anyone recommending Minimalist anything as an "excellent" option. You got back to safe ground recommending tht newbies start out really truly BF.

Khyricat: Clearly, a marathon would be way TMTS. Like anything else it's best to start off easy, with maybe just a quick turn around the neighborhood.

Ken Bob actually told me over

Ken Bob actually told me over the phone that he could see training his feet to tolerate extreme hot pavement, but he, unlike Rick, could not see tolerating extreme cold and snow. He gives props to Rick for being able to do that.

Ken Bob doesn't claim to be a purist, although everyone would like to paint him that way. In fact, if you visit his group on the net, there's a note on the forward page that states this. I too thought he was a purist (meaning no shoes at all, ever), so when we asked him to join the BRS as Senior Advisor to the Board, I wanted to make sure that he knew what our beliefs were, since I didn't want to compromise his views on the subject. Turns out, he was clearly onboard with our viewpoint when it comes to using shoes as tools and the least amount of shoe for the job, barefoot always being best when conditions are safe, and we were rather relieved, since we really value him as a person and as a mentor. So Jason and Ken Bob are coming from the same place.

And, of course, the BRS always recommends that people learn to run barefoot by ditching their shoes cold turkey, making the sacrifices to their speed and distances upfront, and get the racing goals out of the way...knowing that they will be able to acheive all of what they had before, but enjoy it so much more.

Tj is right- Ken Bob only

Tj is right- Ken Bob only suggests people start barefoot (for the same reason we suggest it, too). He DID grow up in Michigan, after all. :) While it is possible to run barefoot in almost any conditions, sometimes it is not wise.

I was pleasantly surprised Competitor has been as open to me writing for them... they aren't as anti-barefoot as they occasionally appear...

It's tremendous progress,

It's tremendous progress, Jason. The more we maintain our presence in the running world, the more seriously we will be taken. If we would have coward from the initial greeting we received in the beginning, the movement wouldn't be as large as it is now. Of course, there is still much more growth ahead, but we are making huge strides, especially in the running footwear market. Education is the area that will be the hardest fought, mostly educating people on the healthy way to approach running barefoot, but when it comes to teaching patience, the "human" factor keeps getting in their way.

Very well done Jason.  This

Very well done Jason. This is the most thoughtful breakdown of introductory barefoot concepts I have seen published.

I love how every time Jason publishes something, he refers to himself as a dumbass or idiot. Now something like sellout I could understand.

But an idiot you are not Jason.

I agree with SayPay, I have

I agree with SayPay, I have been a big fan of Jason's writings since I read his blog post on the 100 mile Ultra he completed last year. A lot of good information is always found within the articles, etc, and you know he has tried and done everything he writes about.
