Chip Timing Questions

I don't know if there are

I don't know if there are many versions of them, but in the one race I ran that used them, they were small plastic discs, about the size of a quarter. Inside the disc are bitty little transponders that tell the race people's computer your number when you step over a mat at the start and finish lines.

At my race they didn't pick up my info because I had it tied in at my waist. Most runners tie them to their shoe laces. BF runners have been know to employ dog collars around their ankles, though any sort of non-binding, non-flopping string or band would do. I'd avoid studded black leather, though - you might hurt yourself.

There are many different

There are many different timing devices these days. Some are disposable, some have to be returned at the end of the race. Some attach to your ankles (or shoe laces), and some are now built-in to the bib race number. You can also buy your own timing device, but normally that's something the elite runners do, not us average Joes. Besides, what a pain to have to register your timing device for every race you want to enter.

Yes.

Yes.

A lot of times, the race's

A lot of times, the race's website will even link to the company they use for the timing. The company's website usually has pictures and/or instructions for using their particular type of chip. Since there are a few different types out there, you may want to see what kind you'll be facing, so you can figure out the best way to attach it to your RoadID.

Both tris I've done its been

Both tris I've done its been a velcro strap with a small chip attached that goes around your ankle. Barely notice it once you get going. Its great because they posted splits on the website too along with the total time.
