NEK - Vermont
I just wanted to share a fun moment I had with the family this evening during our afternoon walk. We went on our evening stroll down our dirt road, taking our time walking/running a mile. They have been teasing me for a while now, but after I shared a documentary on the benefits last night, and they actually watched this one all the way through, both started asking me a lot of questions. Wife included! Tonight they both said they were going to join in on the walk unshod. Was a fun bonding experience and they both said that they want to do it more.

Thanks for letting me share a bit of excitement from northern Vermont!

Excellent! Which documentary did you all watch?

It was less about barefoot running and more about the benefits of being barefoot outdoors, more specifically, grounding. The studies on the health benefits really caught the family's attention, especially my wife who has chronic back pain. But it certainly prompted some excellent conversation on other benefits such as running, muscles, tendons, etc.

It is a good documentary if anyone is interested.

How did her back do walking barefoot? Did she notice any difference, less pain?

My wife slowly warming up to the idea, but she is one who can't stand feeling any debris or texture on the bottom of her feet. Even at home, she always has socks on at least. My two teenage kids really enjoyed it and were even checking out my minimalist shoes today. They are very curious about it all. My wife is too but is still working on the whole "feeling" part of it. We did buy her a grounding mat though. Hopefully, it will help with some of the inflammation.

Thanks for asking!

Does she try to walk outside with socks on? It's best to start barefoot, but if she's squeamish, then socks are better than traditional shoes, especially when she has a back problem. If she doesn't plan on being a barefoot runner, then I wouldn't see a problem with her trying minshoes as well.

I know several people who have bad backs and found that walking and/or running barefoot or minimal helped to lessen their back pain; some resolved their pain.

No, she has yet to venture out of the home with anything less then her regular sneakers. In the home, it's usually just socks. But, she did try on a pair of my min shoes tonight and commented on how comfortable they were when walking around the house. She has been in so much pain recently, I honestly think she will give it a go. I will just have to make sure that she transitions slowly.

TJ, she went on a short barefoot walk with me this am! Unprompted too! We were about to step outside to walk around the property to look at the flowers and she glanced down at my bare feet and said something along the line of "baby steps..." and took off her socks! Afterward, she asked me to get her a pair of min shoes. Woo-hoo! I may just have my first convert....lol

Excellent! Our motto is "Changing the running world one odd look at a time," but the walking world will do. :barefoot:
