It really isn't. Look closer and you will see there are loose bits of material making it look like they serve a function. I invented the system in one try. That's how much of a genius I am. Pretty, too, just look at my feet!

As for the tendons, I would think it is not MT related. Usually when there are these sorts of problems with the tendons, they are married to the other classical symptoms of MT, the painful callous, the aching overuse injuries on the 2nd and 3rd metties. The tendons are usually symptoms of a severe case.

Ok, I am glad that my pain i've been recently having is not from MT since I'm hoping to be pain free and running again soon without any worries of further injury.

Anyway, I do kinda have a painful callous, but it is on the 5th met head (from what i've read online...Metatarsalgia, but that is also what some websites classify the painful callous associated with MT as also). I don't really know if it is just a callous or what. All I know is that it is very painful esp. after a run, but not so much when I walk or stand flat footed. My ankles tend to "need popping" due to previous injuries, and the easiest way to pop them is by letting my foot turn inward and putting pressure on the outside part of my foot. I usually don't "realize" that the "pad"/callous/whatever on my 5th met is "hurting", but when I do that, I am immediately reminded since it is one pain that can almost floor me. One thing that I have found...if I gradually push through the pain and continue "rocking" on that area and/or massaging it, it will eventually almost stop hurting.

Weird about the 5th metty

Weird about the 5th metty acting that way. I have no clue on that.

As for your heel pain, those are the classic symptoms of plantar fasciitis. You just have a very mild case of it. Some have more severe cases of it. You should treat it immediately before it becomes a severe case. For you, at this stage, you would do that by stretching your calves and wearing a night splint. If it was more severe, I would say, taping, ice, and NSAIDS as well. You can visit www.heelspurs.com to read nearly everything you ever wanted to know about PF. Don't let the name of the URL fool you either; it covers a lot of stuff on PF too.

A question about the MT

A question about the MT orthotics:

How thick are the pads in your pictures?

BTW: I posted my humble request to be included among the fellowship, but I haven't been listed yet? To what address do I send my 37b.?

Cheers

Paleo the primitivist.

 The pads are constructed of

The pads are constructed of blue jeans material folded and sewn back onto itself. You can vary the thickness by filling the pocket with duct tape. I will post you now.

What exactly is the

What exactly is the mechanical function of the orthotics? Is it supposed to re-distribtue the weight/force? I would have thought it would go over the 2nd metty, but you clearly have it under the 1st. Does the extra thickness make the 1st metty handle most of the force like its supposed to in a non-MT foot? (Just trying to understand here so I can make my own if need be, though I haven't experienced any pain specifically from my MT.)

Good questions, Danjo.  I

Good questions, Danjo. I would like to know too. Spill the beans, Nyal! And you really put cotton in there instead of duct tape, don't you? Hee.

The pad is placed as to

The pad is placed as to lower the profile of the 1st metty. Normally, the 1st metty takes the greatest portion of the load, but with MT it is shortened. This forced the load onto the 2nd metty that is not designed for it. Most of the symptoms of MT are related to this. The pad makes your 1st metty 'bigger' than the second, realigning the loads. It looks like nothing but works like magic.

You oughta patent that for

You oughta patent that for barefoot runners, Nyal! I am so serious! Would this also help shod runners? Don't shod runners experience MT problems too?

I can't believe that.  He can

I can't believe that. He can still try to make them, market them, and patent them. As in patent pending, no?

LOL. It is enough for me

LOL. It is enough for me that the information gets out there and my ego is pet from time to time. As an anarcho-capitalist I am solidly opposed to the idea of intellectual property. Like I said, pet the ego!
