To encourage pacing and do speed work, just had this idea:

* A group run exercise with one of the runners designated as the "tracker."
* The group must be together the whole run.
* Tracker will be the only one to know the distance to be run and when to sprint and for how long.
* Tracker should not be the fastest runner, preferably average for the group but an experienced runner.
* The group will go into a sprint whenever the tracker yells "deer!"
* The sprint will only stop when the tracker yells "track!"

Thought of this after responding to a question about "how do I make myself run slower at the start of my run." I suggested running like a persistence hunter knowing you might have to run all day and be called upon to sprint at any given moment. Why not make a fun group run workout based around this? Not knowing the length of the run and knowing you need to be ready to sprint will encourage everyone to run slower right from the start.

Thoughts?

Sounds like...fun?

Reminds me of the movie Surviving the Game:
