hello,

I am based in Surrey in the U.K. I have been running for years, including a few marathons but after reading born to run I thought I would give this a go. I also have two metal screws in my heel from a skiing accident so not landing on my heel seemed to make sense. So in Oct I started my barefoot journey. Where I live there aren't that many good areas for running BF so I was using minimal shoes and some others but all zero drop. It was going pretty well, I got to distances around 8 miles and then my calf when ping.

In hindsight I think my form was bad so I have gone back to basics and started trying to do more BF. I took off my shoes halfway round a run and went BF for about 2km earlier this week.

However I am struggling a bit mentally as I am finding the pace I have to go at really slow and the distances much lower than I would like as I tend to run for exercise as well as enjoyment. I also seem to have a sore right knee and I never had any injuries before switching style. I am now focused on increasing the BF element to get my form right and try to get the muscle memory but I don't think I will ever be full BF but will probably run in minimal shoes. I have considered going back to my old style due to frustration but I tell myself that would now be equally difficult after 9 months.

Any tips or advise greatly received.

Elliot

Have you tried running at 180 BPM cadence, quickening your pace? Once you get a good rythmn down, it becomes second place where you don't even have to think about it. The aim is to have a quick turnover using smaller strides. Others here who practice this method can comment.

Welcome to the BRS! :barefoot:

Yes, cadence was one of the first things I tried, however I am pleased to say that this weekend I did quite a fair bit of running around (in the park etc) in barefoot and then went out for a run in my minimal shoes. I really focused on the technique which I knew better having spent the time barefoot. I was slow but I really enjoyed it and my calves didn't hurt. I then took my shoes off for 1km at a suitable place and that was actually my fastest km.

More barefoot is the way forwards.

Hi Elliot
Sounds like you have plenty of running experience behind you already!

As you will probably already have found, there is a wealth of information 'out there' to read/listen to/look at/etc... I know when I started I read as much as possible. Quite possibly too much, because I found myself constantly trying to think about every tiny element when I was running instead of just relaxing into it.

I think what worked for me in the end was to simplify it all into one mantra as I run -short stride, short stride, short stride, etc.... And that seemed to do the trick. Fortunately perhaps I'm not too fussed about speed, but as it gets easier that comes as well.

Try taking a look at this video -it's one of a series of short presentations on barefoot running 'myths'. -Might be useful...

Good luck with the transition -hope it goes well...:barefoot:

Welcome!

The big breakthrough for me was when I *finally* read B2R just last month and someone in that book described barefoot runners at a marathon as looking like "they were running on hot coals." Until then I'd been running very harshly barefoot because I was forefoot striking and pushing back so my feet were getting pounded on the ground and then scraped back. I wasn't lifting my feet off the ground which I consciously had been avoiding because "that sounds like running in place."

Somehow it works. Focusing 100% on getting my feet off the ground ASAP tricks my body into proper form, my feet don't hurt and I can run fast. It sounded like "one hand clapping" nonsense but so much of that mind-body connection really is just that. It was like when I learned to tele ski I heard the advice of putting 100% of my weight on my trailing pinky toe for a proper turn. That actually tricks your body into getting a 50/50 weight distribution even though your focus is 100% on that one pinky toe and ski.

Enjoy!
