7th Annual Winter Challenge

Sorry we are late in getting this up and running. Reports and snowflakes for last year are coming.

Everyone is welcome to participate, whether you run 1 mile or 500 miles.

Challenge yourself and run in the snow and cold.

The challenge runs from Oct 1 2016 to March 31 2017
These dates seem to be for the Northern Hemisphere - doesn't the Southern Hemisphere do this as well, what would the dates be?

RULES
1. All runs/walks must be BAREFOOT
2. Temperature with windchill must be less than or equal to 50°F (10°C)
3. Any run/walk of 1/3 mile (0.5 km) or over can be counted
4. Add your total distance and runs in the appropriate temperature range on the following spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mOduyAo_jHjanyA5L0fH8vw0hE_FWQ9zS3aVUH8sS24/edit?usp=sharing

(Qualifying runs already done can be added to the spreadsheet.)

Select 'Units' (km or mi.) Total distances will be converted to MILES. You will need to convert the temperatures manually to °F. NEW I have added in the top right header a temperature calculator that will convert from ºF to ºC for those who do not use ºF (for the whole world but the USA)

Wind Chill Calculator

This is my first time working the spreadsheet and I've only been going about barefoot for less than a year, so I'm still a newbie. Please be gentle with me if you find any problems with the spreadsheet.

Thanks for all those who have done this in the past Everything was set up real nice and I just need to do a little tweaking here and there. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

How about we have a Southern Winter Challenge that runs from April 1 to September 30. That would be the opposite of our current winter challenge that is designed for only those living in the Northern Hemisphere and the South Pole, though I suppose those in the South Pole could do both a North and South Challenge. I could add a column for North or South to help with the sorting and such.

@hikerdana

Chris, Dana has volunteered to oversee settling up last year's challenge. He will also make sure the snowflakes are distributed as soon as he has a final list of who took part.[/QUOTE]

What year did the Winter Challenge begin?

Dana, as far as the country Snowflakes are concerned, it will require even more management on the back-end, and here's how: You or I will have to create an entry for one Snowflake winner for each country and one entry for the rest of that year's participants, and do this for each year past, present, and future, then award each participant the Snowflake for each year they took part, in order. I would suggest doing all 2013s first, then 2014s, etc. The thing is, if you are unable to continue volunteering in this position, then it will fall to me to keep it up (and like so many other programs/projects here at the BRS that has happened to me more times than I want to count).

The Snowflakes will need to be added in the order in which they were earned in order to have them display chronologically. We can work on that later. I'm just putting them up there to see how it will display.

I have added the Snowflakes to your signature temporarily just to see how they would display alongside the Donors Footprint. We use an add-on called Medal System to add things like this to people's signatures. It looks like the site is going to mix them together, which is fine, but if we wanted to break them out into separate lines (all snowflakes on one line; all Donors Footprints on a separate line), then we will have to pay the developers to rewrite the code, if possible, because they're not the ones who created the add-on. I'm not sure how much it will cost total to do this, but it will start at $159 USD per hour.

I suggest we keep the Snowflakes all the same using the design from past years, and only changing the year. I think it will be too much work to keep coming up with different but similar Snowflake designs each year, then adding all the country names to them as well. Let's keep it as simple as possible.

Thoughts?

Since the site probably doesn't have a lot of spare cash I think we can work with what we have. I had been thinking of making a few years worth of snowflakes now, it is always easier to do a bunch at once, no matter how we do it I can still get a few years worth ready for the future. This is suppose to be the 7th year, since the previous year from what had been posted was the 6th. Einar gave me the link for last year we'll just need a list for the prior years and we can get started. Just give me a few weeks to get the snowflakes done and I'll add countries if we have the info.

Simple always works for me!:)

For what it's worth, I think Mark's words in the other thread sum it up pretty well, i.e.-
"...My basic feeling is that it should be done the way the person who is generously volunteering to manage this challenge wants to do it.
Thanks so much for all your time and dedication to this challenge!"

Thanks for sorting it HD. I'm looking forward to getting in some chilly miles!..

You still want to go forward with the countries, for all years past, present, and future? That's going to be a lot of work for both of us, and like I said, I will end up being the one to manage it all in the future. I just don't know how I can commit to handling it.

How many countries are there taking part? What if someone from a new participating country wants to join in, then he/she needs a Snowflake to be added into the mix, then another new country, then another...? I don't have the graphics skills to create new Snowflakes for these new countries.

The only way I know to find all the past participants/years is to do a search for them through the threads on the site.

I might do it when it's like not blistering cold or something. Don't want to lose a foot.

Thirty (30) miles gets subtracted for frostbite, I'm not sure how many miles you would be subtracted for losing a foot. But 50ºF is pretty warm and very easy to do walking. So go ahead and join the fun.
