Questions for Winter Challenge

A winner for each country AND new snowflake each year?

We need to pass out the Winter Challenge logo.

1. Can someone tell me how it was done in the past?

2. How about a winner for each country and a Grand Champion for the most total miles. It would start for the year just finished and forward. I don't have access to all the old spreadsheets or the time to figure out the past winners.

3. How about a different snowflake each year? We all know that no two snowflakes are alike?

Any other suggests??

Thanks for all the support and patience so far. Like many of you I probably would have never even tried running in the cold without a little incentive.

Hi Dana,

As I recall two years ago, the snowflakes were "distributed" on the honor system. Barefoot Yow designed the image and provided a link to it and it was up to each participant to add it to their own signature line. Yvonne has already modified Yow's snowflake for last year and provided a link to it, which I have already added to my signature. However, Yvonne's image is hosted on a members-only area of this site, so the image is visible only to members who are logged in. Everyone else sees just "IMG" in brackets. I like the idea of having the image hosted on this site since Yow's images are on his Photobucket site, and if that site is ever deleted the images will disappear from our signature. If the images are hosted on this site, then they will be here as long as the site exists. However, I would prefer if they could be located on an open area of this site so everyone can see them, not just members who are logged in.

I like the idea of the organizer distributing the snowflakes rather than relying on the honor system since that would make them feel more like an actual award for participating. However, I don't know how much work that will be for the organizer.

As for your poll, I don't have any strong feelings for any particular option. My basic feeling is that it should be done the way the person who is generously volunteering to manage this challenge wants to do it.

Thanks so much for all your time and dedication to this challenge!

Mark

Thanks for all your feedback to Dana. It's been very informative. I really appreciate Mark's (@Mark) thoughts here: As for your poll, I don't have any strong feelings for any particular option. My basic feeling is that it should be done the way the person who is generously volunteering to manage this challenge wants to do it.

I was somewhat clueless about the Winter Challenge before, since I was not involved in it. Running the BRS day-to-day seven years in a row (come November 1) has taken quite a bit of my time and taken me away from my family and other obligations at times, so I dread taking on another project, especially when we have other resources being implemented on the site, I hope soon, stay tuned. If I had nothing but time, I would definitely handle this challenge too, but I just can't. I'm truly sorry, and I hope you all understand.

I can add the snowflake(s) to the server in a directory that will allow anyone to see it logged in or not, and I started to propose this to Dana in email the other day, but I had second thoughts and deleted it, and here's why: If I add the new snowflake to the server in a directory somewhere, it should show in your signatures for as long as the directory structure does not change, fine, but what about snowflakes past? Do I add all of them to the server, and leave a message/post/thread to anyone who happens to be reading it that if they took part in past challenges, they need to use the new directory path(s) to the snowflake(s) on the server? How do we guarantee that everyone actually switches over to the new path(s)? I don't mind adding them up there, but it would be nice if we could be consistent.

Something has to change though because we can't rely on a Photobucket account to always exist. Someone, please provide me with the link to Yvonne's new snowflake storage location.

I thought the snowflakes in the past were distributed individually, and each of the participants added them to their signature. If they had been, then that would guarantee that the snowflake would not disappear on a mass level from a broken link/path (or being logged off), although they would have had to use their own, individual, off-site storage location and the Image app in their posting/signature box, (but if they deleted the location/account that stored it, only their snowflake would be affected).

Here's the final suggestion, but it's going to require work, and Dana may or may not be up to it (Dana?). Once it's in place, going forward, whomever steps up to coordinate the Winter Challenge will be responsible for adding the snowflakes to each person's account on the site, but it shouldn't take very long. (I will set the system up initially.) Here's how: We can use the same system we use to add the Donor Footprints each year. The coordinator simply adds each participant's member name to an app on the back-end of the site, and the snowflake appears in their general signature location.

I think Dana's idea of having different snowflake designs each year is really cute, since snowflakes are supposed to be unique after all.

Thanks TJ. Maybe Yow did somehow distribute the snowflakes individually, but if so, I was missed the first year I partcipated (maybe because the name I used in the spreadsheet was slightly different than my user name here - Mark S. vs. Mark). I somehow found the link to the image on his Photobucket site and added it myself. The link for the snowflake that Yvonne did is - https://www.thebarefootrunners.org/attachments/award_winter_challenge_2015-png.7628/

I admit I don't know a lot about how this stuff works, which is one reason I'm reluctant to volunteer to manage anything. :)

Thanks again!

Thanks for all the feedback. I would be willing to do the work needed to add the snowflake to each person's signature, that does sound like the best option. I would even be willing to try and fix the past snowflakes as well, though that would happen over time.

As for a winner for each country, my thoughts were to encourage participation. If my country didn't have anyone running/walking in the winter challenge I could win by just running/walking a few miles, or if others were running I could win by running/walking a few more miles. The I think the whole purpose of the challenge is to get people out so hopefully this would maybe increase the number or participants and the number of miles. Also hopefully make it more rewarding for those taking part in the challenge.

I am by no means someone who believes everyone is a winner, but everyone is a winner who gets out and exercises. I also believe in rewarding the hard work people do in not only getting out and moving, but than taking the time to enter that information on the spreadsheet.

@hikerdana, when you've all decided what you want to do about the design of each year's snowflake and the country winners, etc., please let me know, and I will set up the years past, present, and near future on the back end and instruct you how to use it. Deal?

I think Yvonne made a snowflake for last year on the last thread about it, just FYI (I used it in my sig).

When I was thinking about managing it some ideas I had were a different snowflake perhaps for mileage like a regular snowflake then one that had a 100 on it for reaching 100 miles or something like that. Or maybe a different color like blue outlined white snowflake for the coldest run winner. Just some brainstorming I did. But trying to make it a lot more complicated isn't always the best answer either, especially if the meanings aren't clear. I'm fine with leaving everything the same too.

Greetings. I haven't checked in here in a while, although I think I have the current spreadsheet up to date. Have the snowflakes from past years all been awarded yet? It looks like the only ones I have are the ones I added myself (and will remove once I receive the official ones). Just curious what the status is. Thanks!

Dana is still working on it and ran into some trouble. I will point him to your post.
