Winter Challenge Coordinator Needed

As you all know, I don't have much to do with the organization of the Winter Challenges, except to post the final report on the home page.

I just found out that the last Winter Challenge was never finalized, the report/article never written, and the Snowflakes never given out to the participants. I still do not know who created the Snowflakes, so if you know who did, please let me know, so we can have him/her create new ones for the last challenge.

I am looking for someone to volunteer to step up and finalize the 2015-2016 Winter Challenge and submit the report to me for the home page. Paul has given me access to the spreadsheet that is stored online, and I will give you access, so that you can do this. Anyone interested? Any past coordinators available?

Here's the last Winter Challenge Summary that I found: https://www.thebarefootrunners.org/threads/summary-2014-winter-challenge.18345/#post-172549. Your summary doesn't have to be as elaborate as this one, just however you wish to present the data will be fine; beggars can't be choosy.

I'm not able to locate the previous Summaries, so if any of you can, please share them here.

We are also wanting someone to coordinate the upcoming Winter Challenge as well, so if you are up for it, please let me know right away...winter is fast approaching!

Is there any thoughts of maybe merging the Toes on the Road competition with the Winter Challenge? @gueng ? Maybe split it into two halves, or make it yearly Jan1-Dec31 and simply have the cold brackets available all year so everyone gets a shot (even in the southern hemisphere)? if we want to continue doing it similar to how it has been done I may volunteer if no one else wants to step up. I suppose both Paul B and Barefoot YOW aren't active on the forums anymore.

Tristan how does that work for someone like me who never has temperatures in the Winter Challenge range available to run in?

I don't follow either the Toes On the Road program or the Winter Challenge...my plate is full, so you all please let me know what you want to do. Regardless, we please need someone to finalize the last Winter Challenge. :coldfeet:

I have been MIA from this forum for many months; life's had me reeling. Ups and downs.
Realized the new Winter Challenge sheet should be up and wanted to participate, so checked in to find it. I was also hoping to get my snowflake from last WC. Sad to learn all this seems to have been forgotten/overlooked/abandoned. I enjoy the incentive of the challenge...while it doesn't really make me run any more than I do, and I will run whether or not the challenge is in effect, it helps to have a little more motivation especially on the really cold dreary days.

Dana, has volunteered to finalize the last Winter Challenge and has been working on gathering the stats for each of the participants. Thank you, Dana!

Thank you Tristan, Dana and Yvonne for offers/artwork!

As for the value of this competition, for my own part, as a beginning barefoot runner, I can say that last year's Winter Challenge is what made me continue running at all last Winter. And still the memories of that is what made me go out barefoot in the dark in a cold 5C/41F rain this past Sunday morning. And I'll go tomorrow morning as well, it'll be another cold run.

For me it makes a really big difference that other people are doing it year after year, and without this knowledge, I think I would have stopped running barefoot around this time of year.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this challenge is not just a great motivator, it's actually a voice of reason to counter the instinct that says you shouldn't run barefoot in the cold.

I saw @Barefoot Gentile post the winter challenge up on facebook, does that mean you're taking it over Adam?

I might have not picked the best words when I said "so everyone gets a shot" (I assume that is what you are responding too). The winter challenge is temperature specific so yes you only get a shot at it if you run in that climate, and ultimatly that is why it isn't exactly a fair competition since some might not hardly even get a chance to compete (or at all) while far to cold in other areas, and some areas that hover more in the moderate but including section can get a lot more miles in. I just meant to suggest a way of including the southern hemisphere, but I have no suggestions on how to include those in more warm climates. There probably is not many folks in the southern hemisphere on here, but some.

@Mark First time I've seen your avatar, is that you? if so that is awesome man!

We have a wide range of temperatures for the Winter Challenge. The highest temperature for the Winter Challenge is 50 ºF. Now according to AccuWeather the low temperatures for San Luis Obispo CA are in the 40's for much of the winter, so as long as your willing to get up before the sun heats things up again you could probably get a few runs in for our challenge. It does make it more difficult, but still possible. You might look into the Toes on the Road Competition

Any run/walk over 1 mile counts for the Toes on the Road. The Winter Challenge you are only required to walk/run 1/3 mile.

Hope that helps and hope you can find a cool enough morning to join the fun.

I just threw that up on facebook to get more people involved. Barefoot Yow said it was cool for me to do that a few years ago.
