I was blessed with a week off and got to spend most of it in Maine with my 3 kids, an hour or so east of Portland.

Cool mornings and crisp air made for some first class runs. I even love the pavement on the roads there - baby smooth! My favorite run was out the front door, along the coast road through a small parking lot and out a causeway to the door of a small lighthouse. Most of the way I could run in the middle of the road with no traffic to speak of.

My after run routine involved a delicately balanced mix of napping, reading, fishing, eating, drinking and repeating same.

Peace to you all, my friends!

Just came back from vacation in southern British Columbia (Pentiction). My morning runs were through a quiet country road away from the busy part
of town. I was surrounded by cliffs on one side and vineyards on the other. For the first time in my 5 years barefoot running, I actually had a conversation with this shod lady runner who ran with me and wanted to about barefoot running!

JT, your running, napping and reading sound like my kind of vacation. Do your kids join you on your runs?

Gotta love those vacation runs. I was in Kansas earlier this summer for a family reunion. While in Manhattan, Kansas (also known as the Little Apple), I ran along the Big Blue River and Kansas River on a wonderfully smooth, silty-clay trail. While watching where I was going to put my feet on a down slope, a dead tree partially leaning over the trail clothes lined me flat on my back and knocked me silly for a few seconds. Gotta keep that head up and trust your feet to know where to land. Lesson learned. But, oh, so beautiful. The run was first thing in the morning, and all the birds were singing their hearts out, especially an Indigo Bunting that I had to stop and listen to for a minute, a Zen moment thing.

On the north side of Topeka is the governor's mansion behind which is a large patch of woods and meadows along the bank of the Kansas River with miles of running and biking trails. That was also a wonderful run first thing in the morning. A couple times I had to reach out and grab a tree for balance when running down a slick, clay slope. It had rained the night before, and when I grabbed a tree, of course I got a quick shower. All part of the fun.

No, I'm usually out early, before they begin to wake up. My 14 and 16 year old kids hardly ever head out with me, but the 10 year old pedals her bike once in a while and is good company.

For the rest, thank you for sharing and Amen!
