in New Zealand its quite common to see kids learning rugby without shoes

Back in the 80's and 90's there were several NFL kickers who kicked barefoot. They claimed they could "feel" the ball better with a bare foot than with a traditional football cleat. Shoe manufacturers eventually developed a "kicking shoe" specifically for field goal kickers, which pretty much eliminated the barefoot kicker.

I frequently play soccer with my children in the garden. We all play barefoot, for safety reasons (except our girl, who prefers to wear and ruin socks). Playing barefoot really is fun, however when it starts to rain, the gras can get very slippery, so we typically stop our game then.
