Optimal running weight?

... I honestly don't understand why the actual weight value would be important...

It's only important if you want to go faster. Most of the energy used in running goes to fighting gravity. The less you weigh, the less energy you use to run. Take a look at a pack of world-class marathon runners some time. They're short and very thin. A 200lb runner has no chance to contend in distance running ...

I don't worry about this sort of thing, I just have a general distaste for the idea of carrying around excess baggage.

...and I don't know enough about figuring BMI to actually use it. I was told mine ran around 27, but I didn't like that number. I mentally discounted the person's methodology and moved on, naturally.

Oh the irony ;)

I have never shaved once in my life, but I don't expect all men to grow beards because it's the 'natural' thing to do. Nor do I ever expect to drink out of rivers or see spectacles on elephants, although that would be very, very cool.

You can be 'natural' and embrace diversity, it should never be a binary choice that requires a bullet point, but quite often it's the language used to block a simple inquiry.:muted: 'By feel' is another diversion, but with the connotation that everyone feels the same, which is impossible.
The outcome is that it becomes pointless to enquire about anything but the party line.

I know this is not what you're about Joseph, I mean theres not that many men who would paint their toenails and sticks the finger at convention quite like you do.:finger: You've taught me a lot about life and running, which i'll always be grateful for.:singing: Just don't think folk are getting my initial intent for the thread, or i'm not getting the response, probably a bit of both.

I'm not sure if anyone specified distance running in this thread, but most of us here do lean towards that. But there are different kinds of running. A sprinter build seems to be larger and more muscular compared to the thinner and lighter distance runner. I don't strive to be a world class marathoner, they cross the healthy line into the 'do whatever it takes to win' category, and seems health in many cases suffers. Some die. I'm sure many are shining examples of health though, there is a balance point in there somewhere between being healthy and overdoing things, and I don't really know where it is. I know I have overdone things here and there, and could stand to loose some abdominal fat still.

In my mind I was thinking about extra loading on my joints, along with being able to perform well for my age. I'm just not ready for pipe and slippers yet! But nor do I have delusions of grandeur, well, delusions maybe, but not grand ones.:bucktooth:

Gotcha. Fat is bad. Upper body muscle is bad. Lower body muscle is good within reason. You probably want to shoot for a BMI at the low end of the healthy range unless you're big-boned. Staying out of the weight room and running barefoot a lot should do it. :)

Please! The baggage in question, mental or physical is only my own. I am, unfortunately sensitive and/or considerate mostly in retrospect. I deeply regret any irony I may have incited.

When it comes to rejecting other people's methodology, I freely admit that it's a much easier position to take than actually trying to understand something.

Forgive us over here, generally. We are all suffering a severe case of the DT's. Oh, to be on that sceptred isle, where civility, consideration, and reason prevail!

Cheers!

Nothing to forgive Joseph, I'm quite insecure talking on the internet really, and yes sensitive.

'Baggage gate' wasn't meant as a rebuke, sorry if it came across that way. It just seemed ironic that we were in effect talking about the same thing only from different perspectives.
I did feel a little that my request was being swept aside though, but that may be just arrogance on my part. People have the right to respond how they want, not how I expect them to.

All is well with me mate!

As I mentioned, I could profit from an occasional dose of insecurity. It would surely save me from having to apologise quite so often.

It's also much easier to sort these situations out over a pint than over a keyboard.

Cheers!
