News article: One Runner’s Quest To Escape From A Nike Contract

You always get the good stuff, Sid! I'll read more later. Good site.

That is terrible. Money corrupts all good things.
The athletes are just marketing tools to sell ever more crap to people.
I can see that I am going to have to stop wearing clothing that is a marketing tool (looking at my photo) and wear non branded t-shirts. Getting out of shoes was great. All the resources that go into making running shoes that after 6 months of use get dumped into landfill because marketing tells us that to get the best protection we need to swap our shoes after 500km.
In the early years I would wear running shoes until I wore holes in the bottom, maybe running 3000km in a pair.
So to stop that they build in obsolescence such as making the uppers deteriorate more quickly while speeding up the styling cycles to tempt you to buy what you don't need.
We have to halt this throwaway society and one thing is for certain, the shoe companies will be fighting every inch of the way.

Since they do market the 300-500 mile/kilometer BS, they really should make their shoes biodegradable. Corporations that produce high volumes of waste should be held to bio/Eco conscious standards.
