Near Valley Forge, PA
I had my best run of the year last night.

I took off at about 7 PM from a parking lot at Valley Forge National Park (outside Philadelphia, PA, USA) just as a light rain started. It seemed that everyone else was frightened away by the rain and a couple rumbles of thunder. I had the whole park to myself, nearly.

Running in the rain is a delight. It makes 80F feel quite comfortable and reduces the energy required for keeping cool. I do have to take off my glasses, which changes the focus of the experience quite a bit, too.

Feet on wet pavement used to mean hot spots or even blisters back when I was learning to BF. Now a 5 mile run is easy, and I felt like I could have gone on for miles more.

I love the sound of barefooting along, breathing easy with my mouth closed. (...the whole way except to say "Hi!" to the only 2 other people I encountered on the trail.)

As I walked cooling down I had the thought that I need to be aware of what a wonderful thing it is to run at all. I feel like I would do well to try to hold on to the feeling that every run might be my last, and to be deeply grateful to life.

That's what kind of run it was.

Sounds like JT. When its threatening to rain I either wear a visor (for very light rain) or in heavier rains a full blown waterproof hat that for lack of better term I call a safari style hat (full rim). They really help keep the rain drops off the glasses - I wouldn't do a trail run without my glasses, but maybe your vision isn't as bad as mine.

You're right Mr. T, my eyes are pretty awful, like 20/400, but Valley Forge is a paved trail and I've run it more than 100 times. The visor sounds like a good idea when vision is not optional.

BTW, not sure what I was meaning there with that first bit, I think I meant to say Sounds good JT. Late at night it seems I often type different words than I am thinking lol. Anyhow... ok a paved path I could probably do without my glasses as long as it's not all broken up or potholed. I was thinking natural trail, I struggle enough on those to avoid the gravel bits even with my glasses!

There is something primal about running in the rain on a warm day, maybe its the smell of the rain on the warm ground, the feel of the wet ground under your feet.
I'm always a bit careful of the surface I run on when wet as it can turn it into a skating session. Stay off the white road lines too, they can also turn into banana skins to the uninitiated.

...Uninitiated - hell! they're dangerous for anybody!

Tj,

That's painted white lines, not the kind you 80's butt rockers used to do.
