Why do I think I need to do a full marathon now?

My schedule is chaos, not sure it will ever NOT be chaos. Plus, I'll be starting my Masters program online in Jan (which will take me probably 2yrs to complete). Is it irrational for me to think I can train for a marathon with this schedule? (BDF=Belly Dance fitness-very low impact, lower intensity fitness. Core is about 25min core strengthening class, Zumba is high intensity, high impact. the numbers are mileage (accept the spots where it says ZumbaX2 that's where I'm teaching two classes that day). Thoughts?

Go for the plan?

Chill out, and wait? Plenty of time for a marathon..

Screw the training plan, just run and see where it takes me?

You have so many passions,

You have so many passions, Zum. I like that about you. But this isn't something that we can decide for you; you will have to choose. Only you will know when it is right.

With that said, there are not too many women known for running marathons and beyond barefoot, in comparison to the men. We need more of us out there. So you can think on that awhile. ;-)

I'm in the same boat, I don't

I'm in the same boat, I don't have time to train for a marathon but I want to run one in May. I'm just going to do what I can to get trained and see how it goes.

I go with #3 just run as

I go with #3 just run as much as possible(without getting injured of course) but definitely due long runs.

Because like they say, "Is the long run that puts the tiger in the bag" or something like that.

Good luck.

I'm in if you're in Ram!

I'm in if you're in Ram! What's the date of yours? The one Im' shooting for is end of May.

They way I'm rationalizing it is this, since I"ll be in school (likely reading a lot), I will knock out a lot of my reading while out on my runs...killing two birds with one stone. I'm all about that.

TJ, you instigator you. :p

We'll see how it goes, fortunately the one I'm looking to do has a very low registration ($30 by Jan 1st), plus it's a benefit run...procedes going toward the local Y's Strong Kids Campaign :)

Dama, you snuck in on me:) Right on Mama, that seems to be the way I roll these days anyway. With chaos always lingering around a schedule you just have to do what you can to make it all work. Like my Dad says "making chicken salad out of chicken shit"

thanks for twisting guys

Screw the training plan, just

Screw the training plan, just run and see where it takes you.

Focus on one long run per week and forget the others.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about training, or about marathons. But I want to run a marathon barefoot (or super minimalist if I have no choice) in May. My first race ever will be a 10k in a few weeks. Depending on how it goes I will decide if I register for the marathon or the half in Willmington in May.

With the kids and work (from home) I don't have time for more than a long run on we and 1 short run on a weekday. I will be travelling for 3 weeks returning just a couple of weeks before the marathon...but there is nothing wrong with training in Japan and the effects of jetlag will be over quickly.

And I don't think you/we need to run the full 26 miles in training. Just stop at 20~23 and save the 26 for the big day.

Come on, do it! If you do it I'll register too. Next year will probably not be easier, nor will be the year after that, etc. JUst do it now.

Again, I don't know anything about anything but it seems doable and fun.

Stephanie

Does hanging out at the

Does hanging out at the BRS count as cross training or additional miles?

Can you count extra miles for posting instead of just reading? You could BRS time to your training plan.

Every minute I spend reading good stuff here it feels like I'm working toward my goal. I spend more time thinking/reading about running than doing the actual thing, it's pathetic.

I'm assuming you're talking about the DE marathon? This is the one I'm hoping to run for my first full. Maybe I'll see you there.

Maybe we should ALL sign up

Maybe we should ALL sign up for a May marathon.

Which one are you thinking on doing Zumba?

Ram, yes I'm talking about

Ram, yes I'm talking about the DE marathon (http://www.delawaremarathon.org/). It looks like a nice size event, not too large.

"Last year, the marathon was capped at 650 runners; the half marathon at 800 runners; and the 4 person relay marathon was capped at 175 teams with 700 participants."

I want to stick to local races. My next option is the Philadelphia marathon in November 2011, but with 20,000 participants it looks a little big and scary for me.

Dama, Zum and I are going to

Dama, Zum and I are going to be doing the Med City marathon in May down in Rochester. My friend Paul has run it before and really liked it. It would be great if you could come up and run too! A big BRS marathon party!

Zum, you'll be ready come May. You have more than enough time, and from what I've seen of your training you are running strong. Just get that long run in every week and you can make it to the finish line. More than I follow a training plan when I do marathons, I run how I feel. Just as long as I hit several long runs in the 16-20 mile range, I feel good about doing 26.2.

As for why you want to do a marathon, it's probably because I planted the seed this year when I tried to get you to do Mankato this weekend. Of course, we both wisely got ourselves hurt before that...but I'm still itchen to do a marathon with you.

Slouter, I'm with ya on the

Slouter, I'm with ya on the preference for smaller races. I ran the Philly RnR 1/2 last month and while I had a good race I just felt bombarded with corporate junk and it was crowded the entire race. I'm more of a loner runner so a smaller marathon appeals to me. I also like the idea of sleeping in my own bed the night before a race (or at least my cousin's who lives in Wilm) not a hotel.

I'd like to do the Rehoboth seashore Marathon but there are several miles of crushed gravel trails for this one. I've run a few miles on these trails but I'm not sure how it would work out being in the middle of 26.2.

OMG, I am getting all

OMG, I am getting all excited. Let me see what's on the calendar for May but for now I am iiiiinnnnn.

I love this!

Abide, I can virtually handle

Abide, I can virtually handle anything! I'M IN! Which one are we running?

Just do it now.Made me think

Just do it now.

Made me think of "Just Do It Barefoot!"

Also, Zum, now that we have our new anti-swoosh temporary tattoos from our girl, Zap, I was thinking we could call them BRS Smooshes (BRS Smoosh). Hee. What do you think?

Oh yeah.  You can do it.

Oh yeah. You can do it. I've trained for this marathon on 3 or 4 days of running a week and virtually no cross training and so far it's been fine. I will say that my long runs go better if I have more miles in during the week, but that's sort of a quality issue. :) DO ITTTTT!!!!!
