I started using a standup desk at work just over a week ago. So far I'm enjoying it - it beats sitting all day.
I got the foam pad to stand on, and I've been standing mostly barefoot. My co-workers are well aware of my barefoot proclivities so it really hasn't attracted any comments yet, although I have noticed a few glances at my feet when people come into my office. I mostly wear boat-style shoes with no socks anyway, so I just kick them off when I get to my desk.

The first few days I wore my shoes all day and my legs were feeling tired by the end of the day.
It definitely feels better on my legs when I stand barefoot.

Anyone else have any experience with a stand up desk?

I wish we could have these - or more specifically the ones that can vary in height so you can go back and forth. And actually I was involved with our current office layout, though the desks where already ordered when I took over. That and maybe only 1 other person out of 24 showed any interest in a standing desk (we all share 4 desks in a shift rotation). But the big problem with the adjustable ones is we have a lot of monitors and equipment which would make it a big mess trying to get everything movable.

Of course the other problem is motion. It's probably good to be in a standing position versus seated for a while, but our body still needs regular motion to be best.

'Regular' office folks do get up from time to time for meetings, to talk to someone, take a lunch break, but my job we are pretty much glued to our seats and can't even leave the building for a lunch break.

I really struggle some days. Long hours, and getting up really early without much rest makes me pretty tired so not only do I sit but I tend to slouch. Having another hour drive each way just makes a long day of sitting even longer! Nightshifts I tend to get up a lot more, and try to hit the stairwell every couple hours (I work in a high rise, so plenty of stairs to climb). First nightshift can be rough though, I don't get up as much. Dayshifts are more of a problem, and we need to stay at our desks as our management is in the same room, and wearing dress pants socks and shoes I don't really want to be working up a sweat doing stairs anyhow. I'd still usually go to the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch (about 14 floors down) plus a few floors for pottie breaks, but lately I've been trying to eat healthier and bring my own and end up not doing hardly any stairs at all.

All employees att my job have moving desks. I feel I really use the stand up option to seldom . The cables are not a problem since they are placed in a box moving with the table. Except current and network that have a flexible solution. Probably should use it more. Read somewhere that standing up always equals 4 marathons a year in energy.
