Are they a gimmick to trap athletes or do they actually help recovery? Most of the powders I've seen tend to be whey based and I haven't touched dairy for years.:cow:
Are things like hemp powders effective? I know they have less protein but are more digestable, I wouldn't touch soy because it's usually GM.
Any thought of pearls of wisdom to share? Or is it just best to maybe eat a handful of almonds and drink some coconut water and woof a banana down me after a run. This is my normal process, keeping thing whole and unprocessed, but I have a niggling doubt that that's enough.
Just putting out feelers to see what other folk here do about protein and recovery supplements.

Thanks

I'm curious as well, but so far all I have used was hemp. Not the 'protein powder' but the whole hemp seeds I add to my smoothies. I think the powder is no different (other than the hard shell is likely removed first), but I may be mistaken. It does add flavor so not appropriate for all smoothies, even at the fairly mild dose I usually use (1 tablespoon or so).

Thank's Tristan, I went with the hemp powder in the end. Not been using it long enough to see any difference in recovery, but i'm sure my body will be grateful for some amino acids post run.

When I was working out stupid hard, protein powder was really helpful for building/retaining muscle. Soy when I was poor, whey when I could afford the best. Nowadays, I get enough from my normal diet.

Can't tell if it helps or not. But maybe this info helps: at a nutrition lecture I learned that proteins are best taken in the evening. According to the scholars giving the lecture it's because the body rebuilds the muscles at night. If taking the proteins during the day, they'll mostly be used for something else than musclebuilding.
Eat carbs in the morning - to kickstart your day. And proteins at night.
Obviously not necessarily exclusively, that wouldn't taste very good.

How do you like the powder?
I hate the powder myself but love the seeds...they are very tasty.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite stuff to woof down. I just shove it in some coconut water with a bit of olive oil and shake like made until i've got something that resembles pond slime :vomit:

YIKES :vomit:
Sounds nasty, buy the seeds instead they are delicious:hungry:

You can avoid the pond slime effect by adding the powder to a milkshake. Every time I've needed extra protein I've also needed extra calories. A lot of extra calories. And ice cream is an excellent source of calories.

Modern whey shakes taste way better than the nasty plant based ones, pea protein is ok, hemp is just awful though.

It seems to be helping me with weight loss while maintaining muscle mass. I have been taking them daily for at least three months now and the most effective aspect for me is as an appetite suppressant. If that paper is true (not sure sounds like a marketing gimmick) then I should be using protein + carbs during long efforts for maximum effect.

Yea, I have read quite a bit about whey protein and its benefits for athletes.
The Supreme protein is the one you're taking?
Hey, wait a minute, didn't you have a race this past weekend? RR? Did I miss it?
