No critter sightings and to cloudy for stars but a good run!!

First half of the week... Monday a casual 7.3 mile run, still feeling a bit off from those shoes I had to wear at my cousins wedding on Saturday, but by the end I felt back to normal. Tuesday speed workout, 1 mile repeats (x4). 6.75 mi total with warmup and cooldown, the 1 mile runs were all just under 6:30 each. About 16 miles on the bike too. Today did tempo run, 6 miles around 7:45 pace. My warmup and cooldown was the bike ride to the trail and back, 10.7 miles. That's it for me for speed until my 1/2 marathon weekend after next. Everything until then will be modest pace. Feeling good about it but a bit worried about having to be on a trip for work the whole week prior, wearing steel toed shoes, and unknown diet, etc.

Tuesday: 7km barefoot on the beach. Felt pretty good until about 500m from the finish somebody's big black labrador pup decided to play with me and started running alongside, jumping up and grabbing my arm. I had to stop for a second so the apologetic owner could put a leash on him. Labs are nutters until they turn 2, and then they somehow become model citizens.

Today: 7km barefoot on the beach, with a bit of swimming and bodysurfing at the end. The waves were perfect, even if the water was a little bit chilly.

8 km @ 6:05 min/km
It rained last night so I (purposely) found some muddy city trails on my way :D
BTW, on my last 3-4 runs I stopped carrying my sneakers around in my hand. It was about time, honestly :p
I guess I finally feel confident enough.
It is a good feeling to finally develop a sense of what you are really capable of!

28.5 barefoot miles for me so far this week. 7.6 Monday, 7.7 Wednesday, and 13.2 today (Friday). Saw some absolutely adorable, freshly hatched baby ducks on Wednesday. About a dozen. They and mama had stepped out into the path a few feet in front of me, then immediately began scrambling back into the tall grass. I absurdly apologized to the mama, wishing she could understand me.

Should be able to manage 2 miles tomorrow to get my 30.5 for this week. Who knows? Maybe I'll go a smidge more. I am feeling good after my long run today, but I will not overdo it.

Another barefoot runner friend of mine keeps telling me I'm going to lose muscle mass from running long distances, but I haven't seen it happen in the past 2-3 years. Besides, all my weight lifting, swimming, and gardening has got to be helping keep up that sort of strength. As evidence, I cite the unintentional busting of another spading fork last week...

21.25 miles today, barefoot.
Mashed my little to on a rock at mile 17 and had to bail on my planned 50k. Could still run to the nearest town that was thankfully only 4 miles away. It's swollen and bruised but I don't think it's anything serious.
On a plus my soles held up well on some quite gnarly terrain, I shall wear minimal footwear in the future on these trails though, lesson learned. The annoying thing is I felt really good and could have easily managed another 10miles. Doh.

Yesterday a very easy 5 miles at slow pace just to stretch the legs out, I had planned on a long run today so just took it easy. Today met Yvonne for a long run, well a short long run (11 miles) at a modest 9+ min/mi pace with another 1 mile walk at the end. We're both doing the Capital City Half Marathon next weekend so didn't want to overdue it. Checked out a newly finished section of the trail, connecting the two existing trails together and providing a crosswalk tied in with stoplight to get trail uses across a very busy and dangerous intersection. Very nice! The only thing left unfinished is a RR crossing near the new section. You can cross it right now but its about 50 yards not barefoot friendly ballast rock. Should be done this year. That will provide me with 28 miles of continuous paved rail trail that starts 5 miles from my house. At the end of that a short mile or less through a small town and another 12 miles of rail trail continue after that too. It's so nice they are putting in these trails and also connecting them.

Hmm I wonder if this is more true for longer distances (like what ultra runners do). I haven't noticed loss of muscle mass but my training is all over the mark. Still though I try to do weekly long runs in the 10-20 mile range, though much over 1/2 marathon distance is often only had during mid spring through fall. Yvonne is pretty ripped and we do most of our long runs together, and she often gets more weekly miles in too since my shift work schedule gets in the way. I'm sure you loose some fat and get leaner, but that's not the same thing and desirable!

Ahh, you were still in that stage. It is a nice feeling to finally 'let go'.

Sorry about the toe! Hope it heals up good and quick and nothing broken or strained to bad. Impressive mileage though, even the cut 'short' at 21+ miles! ;) training for something in particular or just felt like doing such a long run for the heck of it? Been since last summer that I have been over 20, if I ever even did over 20 last year ,I can't remember, and now I think of it I probably didn't since I didn't do a marathon last year. I've got to get back at it though since I committed to a full this fall already.

This seems to be a drawback on really long barefoot trail runs...late in the run when you get tired and your running form gets sloppy a bit the risk factor for the toes goes way up...just something i have noticed and you really have to be focused in the later part of the long runs to determine the right time to switch to min-shod.

Thanks makaman, you're right I should have switched a few miles earlier, the ironic thing is that I was distracted by the air ambulance helicopter flying over. I should have stuck out my thumb instead of my toe :nurse:

Thanks Tristan.
These days I'm happiest running in the company of sheep, big sky's and landscapes. I never did catch the racing gene, which is probably why I gravitated towards distant running.
You'll do fine with the full, just train to run your own race with the time constraints you have and celebrate the day.

Sunday morning - my first continuous 10km for over a year, but my watch ran out of battery after 300m. I'm not the most organised person in the world. Lovely morning on the beach though.

On the cross training front I paddled 8km in a kayak yesterday and spent a few hours this afternoon scrubbing my deck, which is actually hard work. I told my daughter I was practicing to be a pirate.
