Hello all,

First of all, if you are sensitive to pictures of injuries you'd better like to leave this thread here. If not, keep reading.

Although not new to minimalist running, I got into barefoot running like 6 weeks ago and in this time I've gotten a few blisters, but one of them could be defined as The Mother of All Blisters.

It was more than 1 inch long. It eventually healed and the serum was reabsorbed, but the old layer of skin remained there. It lasted for a couple of 10 km barefoot sessions but in the end it peeled off and revealed a new, fresh, newborn pigglet toned patch of skin, which is significantly thinner than before.

Maybe it does not look so good in the above picture, but there it is.

My questions are:
  • What precautions should I take now in order not to get hurt right there? Is there any kind of adhesive plaster suitable to cover it while running barefoot?
  • Next time I get a blister, should or shouldn't I drain it? I didn't drain this one because I read it could be dangerous in regards of getting that area infected, but other times I've noticed that draining a blister makes it heal faster (although I never do it immediately, I wait for one or two days).
  • How bad is it to get blisters once and another in the same place? I assume that in the end the skin will grow thick enough to avoid getting blisters, but in the meantime...
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Cheers!

The best approach is prevention. Where there are blisters there is unwanted motion in the shoe. Lace them better to prevent motion. Moleskin is what you use with an area that is subject to abrasion.

I hope that helps.

Thank you @Backfixer . However I got those blisters during barefoot running sessions —mainly for two reasons: lack of experience and still insuficient skin thickness of my foot soles.

The good news are I did not get any blisters during my last session on last Sunday.
Just in case I got more in the future, is it best to drain them or not? Because my experience tells me they heal better amd faster when drained, but I read somewhere it's not a good idea to do that because it increases the risk of infection.
Thank you in advance.
