Hey all, I use the "Map My Hike" app a lot and they have a place to log your shoes to see how many miles you gone in them. I sent a request to see if they could have a "Barefoot" option and I never received a response. Only when the terrain is icy and too rocky do I use my VivoBarefoot shoes and I log them at times. I wonder if more people asked if they would do that. Would be nice to document all my barefoot hikes. Thoughts?

You probably just confused them!

I've been using mappedometer.com to figure out distances, etc. of my runs and walks. I can use the "staight line" option plus switching to satellite view to draw in trails. I don't have a smart phone or gps, so this is as good as it gets for me.

I just got a pair of Xero shoes Z-trek sandals plus neoprene socks as a lightweight back-up for barefoot hikes in the Olympic mountains around here. I figure that set up will work in slush, which is the worst situation I can think of out in the woods. That or having to bushwack through brambles...

All the best,
Scott

All my hikes so far since I've started recording this stuff I've used a Garmin Oregon. I don't get to hike very often, and so far its been all barefoot, so having separate categories wouldn't really do much for me lol. Only thing is none of the software works on my computer, at least that I have found so far. I have to record the gps file onto SD card and then pull it up on my computer into google earth to be able to see my maps.

I've also asked MapMyRun for a barefoot option. There response is below, maybe we should send requests to Zappos.

Hi Dana,

Thanks for writing and for your feedback. We are aware that the gear in Gear Tracker is not fully up to date. Unfortunately, we cannot update it without the assistance of a third party (Zappos), and therefore do not know when the list will be updated. We'll keep your suggestion in mind for the next update.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks,
Sebastian

I use mapmyrun. I run in xero shoes at night on occasion and left the gear tracker on VibramFFS, which I have but rarely use. I figure if they have the data that I and others are using minimalist shoes, they will keep that category in their inventories. I can't imagine the difficulty of updating that list! So many model changes every year just to trick the consumer that they need the new model.

I use Garmin Connect as my main tracking tool and that exports my stats to most everything else. Garmin allows you to keep track of barefoot miles, which is really cool.

Which model or generation do you have and what features come with it? If you don't mind me asking. I am just starting to think I might want a garmin rather than using up my phone battery with the app mapmyrun.

I have a couple of Garmin devices. My favorite is the Vivoactive watch which counts your steps all day long and reminds you to be active. It is always with me and works well with my android smartphone and automatically downloads my runs so I don't have to hook anything up. Battery life is 10 days without the GPS on, otherwise 10 hours or so. Of course if you connect to your phone and have lots of activity that will drain your battery a bit faster.

They have two Vivoactive watches available now. One has a Heart Rate monitor built right into the watch so no strap is needed. That one I believe is called Vivoactive HR. Mine has an optional heart rate strap that I can use. I don't always need to know what my heart rate is and the straps are much more accurate. But it is a cool feature.

I have also used the Edge 800 for my bicycle, but this watch does everything, even cycling. Just realized my bike has clip pedals, guess for biking it is back to the shoes. Yes, I know I can pedal without shoes, but with the shoes clipped in, it is so much nicer. It would also mean I would have to buy new pedals. Maybe I'll outfit a second bike for barefoot pedaling.
