Crossposted from the other BF RWOL forum:

So, I signed up for the Warrior Dash with hubby, thinking we would do some fundraising for my work's Chicago office. The fundraising office never promoted our efforts, so I ended up not really raising money. My Chicago colleagues did the Joliet race and made it sounds super easy - I kind of wonder if Quarryville was more whup butt than that one, though? My barefoot peeps [YOU GUYS AND YOU CAN SUCK IT!] said to do it barefoot, so I wore crappy old beach shoes that I had to ditch once we got to mud. These shoes offered almost no protection and the right one had huge holes in the sole - for some reason, I thought the whole race would be on soft dirt trail. I was stressed before the race and I think I might have come to my senses and taken trail shoes, but I was rushed and just grabbed what was around (I run in these on city streets with no problem).

Well, crayola. The first section of the race was huge chunky landscape gravel which was a problem even with the shoes. Then we got on nice trail and had the obstacles. Lots of obstacles - many more than I expected. I thought it would be more running than obstacles, but it was more obstacles than running. I was slow on the obstacles, but I got through them all fine. The shoes were fine on them and me and hubby passed quite a few people.

After the creek crossing (swimming under logs), I lost my shoes in the first mud pit. I had to continue barefoot on a brutal creek crossing, uphill mud climb, steep muddy dowhill, and then back to the %$&*# landscape gravel. It finished in a mudfield covering crushed asphalt that felt like walking on glass.

The pain started on the way home and eventually I figured I'd broken or severely bruised my toe. I went to the ER and I mentioned it felt like something under my toenail, but they never looked at it but did an X-ray to rule out a break. After reaching a level of pain on the way home I have never felt in my life, I finally pried my toenail away from the toe and, sure enough, I just had a cra*load of gravel underneath the nail. I picked it out with a needle and drained the pus and immediately the pain subsided. It's still swollen and infected-looking, but I am ever grateful it's not a realy injury and will not derail my half marathon and upcoming 4 miler race training.

Capmikee and I ran it together and he went BF all the way and was fine. As someone on the course pointed out, he went "spandex-only" (just some bike shorts).

That's awesome, J.!  Well,

That's awesome, J.! Well, not the toe, but the rest of it! Tell me this wasn't the SAME toe you've been messing with lately. That poor thing will never get better, if you don't quit banging it up! Hee.

No, it was a different toe on

No, it was a different toe on the other foot. I did stub that toe again during the race when Mr. Hubby stopped to see if I was still keeping up - I looked up when I saw him stop. I got real grumpy on him about not stopping and distracting me.

What do you mean "walked" the

What do you mean "walked" the fire obstacle? That's pretty tuff, too right? Walking through fire? Hee.

Yeah, the race management was

Yeah, the race management was not happy. I could have just walked around, but in the moment I thought for some reason that was not. an. option. I had done every obstacle up til then, so I was not ready to concede. It's the easiest obstacle if you can actually walk on broken glass or have protective footwear.

Schwab - you just sealed the

Schwab - you just sealed the deal for me. Thanks for sharing. I was signed up to do the Warrior Dash here in Nor Cal, but they moved the venue. I'm now signed up to do the Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run which is similar since the Warrior Dash is too far of a drive. I think I will go with my old crappy running shoes. Did you at least get a free beer and one of those cool horned helmuts?

Hubby did the Merrell Mud Run

Hubby did the Merrell Mud Run here in Philly and really liked it. I got the helmet and a t-shirt but no beer (I am one of those Paleo people - no grains).

Hey you never told us it

Hey you never told us it was in Quarryville, just the name sounds very gravelly :)

Oh yeah according to Mark fermented grains are fine for paleos.

I am signed up for the NorCal

I am signed up for the NorCal Warrior Dash this month. I am figuring on doing it in the Sockwa's. Should stay on pretty well, and provide just a little bit of protection.

Glad you enjoyed the race at least a little :)

Weird - they moved our venue too. It was originally in Maryland. In addition to beer, they also had barbecue turkey. I would have loved to have some of both, but I'm very sensitive to all sorts of ingredients, including grains, MSG, and sugar - that's why I'm Paleo too.

I had fun at the Mud Run but it was really more of a trail run than an "adventure race." There were only 5 obstacles over 10K, and they were all very minor. The Warrior Dash has more serious obstacles, and there was a lot more mud and difficult terrain than the Mud Run. I think I liked it better.

 I think fermented grains

I think fermented grains are fine for Paleos, too - my tummy just can't handle them :( Hubby made delicious mead recently, though, and I drink spirits.

Quarryville should have given a clue, yeah!

Way to go, JS.  And you used

Way to go, JS. And you used to be such a toff! Now you're the Warrior Queen. I'm inspired.

My first race of this millenium is going to be on Halloween, the Evansburg 10 Mile Trail Run. No obstacles or fire. Just two creek crossings, lots of rocks and lots of hill work. I feel the need for encouragement like your example gives me.

THANKS!

Toff? Evansburg sounds fun. I

Toff? Evansburg sounds fun. I don't really get to run trails ever, so that part was really nice - much easier than I thought it would be. All the shod people were complaining about the gopher holes and tree roots, but I thought that aspect was no big deal. Someone said over on RWOL said the Quarryville Warrior Dash had 800 feet ascent/descent. Since I don't run on trails, that's the kind of language that has me bewildered but it sounded cool. The creek crossing were the best part IMO.
