I work at a computer research facility at the University of Pennsylvania - lots of geeks and computer people. Every day at work I learn something new...

I already knew that one guy I work with walks barefoot a lot. He wears flip-flops, slippers or nothing on his feet in the office. He's not a runner, though.

A new guy just started in IT and he wears VFFs to work. I asked him about it and he says he likes them for hiking - also not a runner.

I've seen a number of people barefoot around the office.

Personally, I'm uncomfortable going barefoot at work, since I like to at least LOOK professional.... ;) Of course, I also sit on a yoga ball at my computer a lot, so that kinda ruins the look.

But today, I saw a new one: I went over to someone's office to ask him a question and he tried to find a chair for me. Another guy offered me his chair. He was standing up, at his laptop, which was sitting on top of a stack of cardboard boxes. And he was barefoot! His flip-flops were nearby.

If you were to walk past my desk, you'd likely see me standing barefoot with my monitor on top of a plastic milk crate, my keyboard on a cardboard box and my minimal sandals nearby.

When I started this job back in January I got far more comments about the fact that I often stand while working than I did about not wearing shoes. Over the winter I walked around the office in just socks. Starting in the spring I switched to staying barefoot at my desk and slipping on my sandals when walking around.

Peace,

Karen

must be nice to have a job

must be nice to have a job like that. If I could go barefoot at work I would be 100% barefoot all year round. I hate wearing shoes period!

I'm jealous of the standing

I'm jealous of the standing option, although I do sit on a pilates ball like jschwab. My piriformis/right glute has been killing me for weeks and I think it's from sitting too much.

I work in a very casual office where I'm the only staff so no-one cares really what I do except my boss. I will wear shoes in and then kick them off under my desk. He has learned to accept my various quirks and being barefoot is only the latest. He knows though he can count on me to look professional /dressy when we have certain clients scheduled. Otherwise, our clients mostly are laid-back too and they think it's funny that I pad around in professional clothes sans shoes.

I have a space heater at my feet so I'll survive the winter.

BTW- I thought flip-flops were supposed to be horrible for one's ankles (not to mention really dirty). Thoughts?

I heard that about flip flops

I heard that about flip flops too. I also heard how nasty and germy they can get, but then again shoes are probably much worse. I like it barefoot myself. You can't go wrong there, but i have to wear shoes at work . Outside of work I go barefoot or wear vibrams, and flip flops, but I wash them about once a week!

The only footwear I can get

The only footwear I can get away with anymore, due to the MN condition caused by shoes, is flip-flops. They're a lot cleaner than a shoe with a closed in toe box, sole, etc.

But much dirtier than a bare

But much dirtier than a bare foot.

And, worse for your entire body and mind as well.

Too bad most in Western society have it backwards.
