Bad A$$ Feet
By Longboard

Last week I heard for the first time about the Downtown Detroit Runners.

On their website they talk about how the weekly participants range from walkers to marathoners, and I figured, hey, what the heck!

So last night I showed up for the Tuesday evening four mile/six mile run in Midtown.

Turns out they've been doing this for decades, and most of the folks are hard core marathoners and ultra runners. One guy asked me about barefoot/minimalist and where it's at/where's it going etc., so I gave the whole spiel as if I was an expert or something. He told me his weekly mileage in full blown running shoes and I commented "Hey, obviously for you it works so there's no need to even think about switching things up".

Turned out he holds a WORLD RECORD for marathon running!

Most were of course amused by my bare feet, and at least I took it all in stride being the only slow poke to show up and run. It's a good thing I was born and raised in the Motor City, and had worked on a public utility paving crew during my college years......since I was dropped quickly and on my own after the first half mile having to navigate for myself.

I'm a planner type, so I had asked for and received a map of the route in advance. I then bicycled it just to see what kind of surfaces and debris to expect. It was sort of barefootable, so I was in.

At the start the leader was handing out route maps, and as he was about to hand me mine I told him that I was already briefed and cool with it. He then informed me that the route had been changed in order to incorporate a stop 1/2 mile from the finish at a house for a beer break!

I was thrilled at the idea of a brew stop, but when the new route map depicted turning on to M.L.King from Rosa Parks Blvd I started wondering if I should have duct taped my soles prophylactically.

Everything of course went fine, and although I ran most of it solo the leader actually had been looking out for me and monitoring my progress from the cross streets.

And the house we stopped at? Great people, Founders IPA, PBR, you name it. Brand new construction at the corner of Contours and Miracles, just blocks away from the corner of Aretha and Robinson, and around the corner from Temptations and Four Tops.

This newly designated and re-badged Woodbridge neighborhood has a lot going for it.

Looks Like Motown really is making a comeback......I'm going back for more next week for sure, this time a little bit North of there, should be fun.

So my feet survived the Cass Corridor, that proves bare feet are capable of trodding anywhere.

I moved your colorful report to the home page and spruced it up, Board. Notice anything about the picture?

Other than barefoot runners, no.
What's the special significance of your file photo?

O.K., now I get it. I was looking for some kind of Detroit connection.
Grand Rapids is about three hours away from Downtown Detroit, pretty much a foreign country to us.
Matter of fact the last time I was there was for that event four years ago!
That's kind of like you in Atlanta associating an image of Williamsburg Kentucky with the Peachtree Runners Club!
That's one reason it's so hard to get the Michigan membership together for runs.
To keep it in perspective, Georgia is the 24th largest state geographically with 59,441 square miles. By contrast Michigan is 11th with 96,716! That includes both peninsulas as well as lakes, but you never know, we may have a member living on a sailboat one day so we have to take that into consideration. In all fairness we do have a Yooper chapter, but as Ken Bob suggested to me four years ago we really need a Southeast Michigan chapter which would include the Metropolitan Detroit area, Pontiac, Flint, Ann Arbor , and even Windsor Ontario Canada.
The Canadian members in Ontario actually drive NORTH to events in the Detroit area!
I'm going way out West to Kalamazoo tomorrow for the Kalamazoo Klassic Pump and Run.
The pump (bench press) starts at 4:00 p.m. Friday, and the run is Saturday morning.
Got to replenish the carbs Friday eve after the lifting, so I'm thinking same as last year........Bell's Brewery Biergarten. Looking optimistically at getting the full 15 minute maximum available reduction in the 5K for doing the max allowable 30 reps. Marine drill sergeants are watching closely and disqualifying any reps that don't touch the chest or make it to full elbow extension. Still a piece of cake for me, but I'll really need that reduction for as slow as I am right now!

That's about all I have for Michigan and barefoot running, those pictures. If you have a better one you would like to share...

I don't have any barefoot ones except the ones of me or my wife or the Ann Arbor IBRD ones that show a bunch of us standing in front of the van.
The WSJ one was a suburban Detroit race with the logo of the race visible.
There also is the one of the two ladies from Tecumseh that shed their shoes after seeing us at IBRD last year that made the local paper. It shows the banner and signs.

This race is at 10 mile road, just two miles North of Eminem's beloved 8 mile road.

I have the IBRD ones but it seems like there is no way to upload in this thread. Is that true?
The one's above I copied and pasted from the web, but that doesn't work from my files and there's no upload button in this thread.

Cool.. My facility admin and med director from the Detroit clinic both run with that group occasionally... I do more out here. reminds me- planning to Running Between the Vines in Jackson this August.. will be mostly barefoot if not all... goal- full 1/2 marathon barefoot!
