Zion 100, 2014

... but my conditioing workouts whether they were in the gym or running were on average not more than 30min to 40 min long by themselves. Adding my warmup would make each workout roughly an hour.

Thank you for sharing this. Your blog's race report was gripping. The fact that your training program, while never easy, is only an hour/day, 7hrs/week, not LSD (and avoiding it's debilitating injuries!), is on (beyond) the magnitude of "take off your shoes." Wow. You so inspire. Thank you again.

darm, if you think an LSD will give you debilitating injuries, you think it wise to run an ultra? o_O

Hey Rick-

You will rock! The one thing I wish I'd done on my DNF 100 was take salt tablets. By mile 50 I had stopped sweating, and was too boggled by then to admit that was a bad thing. Also: have a good back up crew. Will you have pacers?

John

Thanks John. After the Bryce run last May, I really concentrated on improving my nutrition and hydration and have done well, of course a 100 is a whole different ball game.

Are you still coming out this way? Not doing the 100 this year opens more running options for me (no taper in March now). I still might do the 50k option at the Zion 100 and am planning other long runs in April and May.

One of Zapmamak's links said recovery times from LSDs skyrocket with increasing distances -- stacking them too close to each other => injuries causing stopping to heal, as many of us (newbs) hit. This type of TMTS seems totally avoidable using the Ranch's thinking.

any heavy workout will need longer recovery. if not you risk injury or illness.

At least go for the fifty! That's totally doable!

No 50 mile option, but I will be marking trails and doing clean up. I should get at least 50 in that weekend.

Will they let you move your registration out a year?

Hey Abide. How have you been? I can move the registration to next year or do any of the other Ultra Adventure races. The race entry was a freebie because of my work at previous races so I am not out any cash. That has me wonder though, if it had been a "real" registration would I have trained better and stuck it out?

That's great news I really was hoping to run some of their races. We are doing well we became expats a couple of weeks ago so we are trying to get situated in our new country. I haven't been running much but have definitely made up by walking. Oddly enough my body feels great haha. How are you and the family doing? Do you go stir crazy this time of the year?

The expat life is a good one. Things are inherently more interesting. Where are you exactly?

BTW, at your suggestion a while ago, I've really been focusing on the big, heavy, main lifts, and getting good results. I still do some of the secondary stuff, but it seems like one could really just do 6-10 of the fundamental movements (Deadlift, Squat, Bench Press, Bent-over Row, Pull-up/Chin-up, Shoulder Press, Dips, and maybe a few others) and get by just fine.

Nowhere inherently difficult to an American. The Netherlands close to Rotterdam to be exact.

I'm having a hard time finding a gym out here that's convenient. Everything opens late and closes early. I'm gonna have to invest in some weight equipment again once we get situated. I should post another neat little routine I was doing for a while. I'll do it on our other thread so we don't hijack Ricks too much.

Haha! Good idea Abide. That's my job to jack Rick's thread. ;)
