Mileage Reporting 49th Week 2013

I had a feeling it would be my last run in shorts for the year. -25 F. for a low this morning with 8 inches of snow on the ground. Walked from the car to the house barefoot at -18. Not even going to run shod in these temps., but also, I'm for once giving myself a proper taper for a race this weekend.

At what low temp do you not do a barefoot long run.
temps for the marathon sunday are forecasting low 25F high 40F.

Mid 20's if it is sunny and not windy. Freezing if conditions are iffy. Above freezing if ground is wet.

Your biggest challenge will be staying warm waiting for the race to start. If you stand around bare and start the race with cold feet, you might be uncomfortable for many miles. I would suggest a cheap hat, gloves, sweat shirt, and socks that you can dispose of when you are warm enough (lose the socks right at the start if your goal is a BF marathon.) Most races I have been to will donate items if dropped at aid stations. What is your cloud and wind forecast? Sunny and calm you should be ok. Sun on the pavement will make a huge difference. Have a great race!

3.6 mile run with a colleague. he was kind of shocked at my "speed". he was used to nearly puking with a running group and felt great with me. i felt great afterwards but want to go to sleep early now. i ran in shoes because it is cold here now. 25f in the morning. no idea what it was at 8:30 but it was damn cold.

yesterday squats, deadlifts, pistols, and one armed pushups. a couple today too.

Ran about half a half-marathon last night after work, barefoot. Kept it very easy, and one thing I've definitely learned is that the best way for me to keep things on the very easy side is to not look at the watch. Start it, punch the split button when necessary, but never look at it. There must be something in my head that if I look at how much time has elapsed, it makes me push a little harder. So the solution to that if I want to run really easy is not to look at the watch.

No running this week. First I was waiting for my stubbed toe's swelling to go down. Then yesterday it felt close to normal, if still a little stiff, so I tried to run up on my fairgrounds street. It had already been plowed after our 5-6" snowfall on Wednesday, and Nick's Vivobarefoot Neos seemed to provide pretty good traction on the compacted snow, and my Merino wool layers kept me warm enough in the single-digit temps and below zero (F) windchill, but my right MCL felt funny soon after I started, so I bailed after less than a half mile. I haven't done much stretching or massaging this week, maybe that's why. Or maybe it was Wednesday's squat fest. (Have I mentioned how much I love overhead squats?)

In any case, today it feels fine, but it's almost as cold as Winterpeg out there (-3F/-7F windchill), so I'll just finish the week with two more st sessions today and tomorrow and start fresh with a run on Sunday, when the high should get up into the teens.

Kind of disappointing, but I suppose a week off can be a good thing, like taking last week mostly off from st was. This week I've been having really good st workouts. My front/back, top/bottom pairings are really coming into their own now. Hopefully this tweaklessness will continue. It feels great to settle in and not have to think too much while I'm lifting, like the way a good run feels.
So the solution to that if I want to run really easy is not to look at the watch.
Yah, gadgets can definitely mess with one's head. These days, my Garmin serves mostly as an odometer. While in the middle of a run, there's only three pace measurements: slow, so-so, and somewhat faster.

Edit: congrats on the half marathon run Scratch! You've made really rapid progress! Must be all the run dreams.

That sounds about right. I can go a little colder than that, but I think 20s is the norm under dry, windless conditions. Most people with decent cold tolerances should be able to manage that. But if the marathon starts early the ground could be colder than air temp, right?

Well this week is seriously sucking for running mileage, I have 0.00 miles ran. Lots of Christmas and kids stuff going on. Well, maybe I needed a week off anyway.

Nice Job Scratch. That is really good progress. I made a lot of mistakes when I first got a GPS, but now it has really helped me to keep my pace slow and more consistent.

Off to get ready for my binge run tomorrow. Hoping to do the race minimal (sandals), but the forecast is cold and snowy. Who other than a barefoot runner is going to bring 6 footwear choices to a race? I'll give a report tomorrow. Have a great weekend!

26 minutes on the elliptical today. Kicked my butt again pretty bad. I had planned on doing 45 minutes on an easy setting, but the setting I used apparently wasn't as easy as I thought it would be so I stopped early as today was just supposed to be a day to keep me loose for the 5k on Sunday that I am doing. Pretty dang cold here so don't think I will be able to go as fast as planned on Sunday without hurting my lungs. I think they are saying it will be somewhere in the 20's on Sunday and it is possible for snow. Should be fun regardless though and I have a buddy of mine running with me that I havent seen in a while so it should be a great race.

On Monday I did a steep, rocky 6.47 mile trail run in Altra Lone Peaks. I know that's not barefoot, but the trails in my area are really not suitable for barefooting... Big rocks, rocky soil, and cactus. Plus, it was 30F and snowing lightly (and eerily misty- I couldn't see more than about 50 feet off the trail).

Tuesday, I did 2.35 miles in a pair of Altra Provisions that I just got in the mail Monday. I currently have 3 pairs of Altras: the Lone Peaks; a pair of Superiors; and now the Provisions. I needed some new road shoes anyway! I guess I'm becoming an Altra guy.

Wednesday, we had about 14 inches of snow (they closed schools here the next day for the first time in over 20 years!). I had made a challenge to myself to try to run at least one mile a day every day between Thanksgiving and New Year's, so I put on my Smartwool toe socks and my Fivefingers and leashed up the dog and did 1.25 miles. It was a blast! I had a meeting to go to about a half a mile from my house, and my car was buried, so I just ran down and back (another 1.12 miles total), still in the Fivefingers. They are actually great in deep snow, and even though it was 16F, my feet were quite comfy.

Thursday, I did another 3.3 in the Vibrams in the snow. It was 12F, and still comfy.

Today, I did 5.28 in them. It was 16F when I started and 9F when I got back home (I run after work, since I am not a morning person and have to leave for work at 6AM). I wasn't fast due to the deep and rough snow/ice, but honestly, I felt like I could have just kept going and going. I had a 2 inch icicle on my mustache when I got home, though, so probably it was time to quit!

I think I'd prefer some of those conditions to the 15 - 20C temps we've had most of this week. Running in shorts in December is never a good thing in NYC!
This week has been trying. :(

This week has also been stinky for my mileage, like some others here. At least I'm not alone.
The stomach bug. Blame it on.
So, uh, sunday was light st, monday was 2.5mi, lunch swim about 30 min, tuesday was gym then swim, over an hour, wednesday I did a swim 45 min or so but nothing else, thursday a swim but I can't recall what else, today gym then swim.

On the gym days, I've been doing 1 mile on the square track in my thin socks before st. Meh.
Can't get myself out of bed for the cold windy wet weather this week. Staying up late, motivation low. Couldn't find my sandals for a few days. Excuses excuses.

Are you by any chance doing The Winter Sun Run in Moab tomorrow? I'm not (I work Saturdays), but I know several people who are headed over there from our Western Colorado town.

How disappointing about the race getting canceled!

Usually, if you just hit the reply button, the quote code shows up in brackets at the beginning and end of the quote. You can delete parts inside the quote that you don't want to take up space with. Now, let's see if I did it right....

Today, I swam about 35 minutes, then was on the spin bike 75 minutes.

The best news is that baby granddaughter is out of surgery after a very long time. Am still waiting for a more detailed report about how she is doing, but at least she is "doing".

Just back from a 6 mile run, wore the Xeros because of damp roads and cold windy conditions, didn't want to worry too much about the feet losing heat by getting wet.
