Ok, You're a runner, Get Over it

I guess I don't see it the same way. A lot of folks think about their running bumper/window stickers the same way I do about my veteran plates and OEF stickers, with pride and a sense of accomplishment. Sure there are those who are looking for attention, but really that could be said about almost anything. More likely those that have a problem with these things probably have an insecurity that these items cause to rise to the surface that they don't want to admit/deal with so they instead make fun of or make some story up about how these people are just attention whores.

Yeah, but I bet he knows a hell of a lot more football stats then all of us here combined.

I have to wonder why he is so angry about it. I can see possibly writing that he doesn't understand, but to say he "knows" why everyone does it is, dare I say, arrogant? I think Nick is right on about the accomplishment factor. How is it any different than displaying a diploma?

I think people can get defensively angry because they aren't completely satisfied with their own choices, too. That has happened to me a lot when others are the ones to ask where my children go to school. When I say we teach them at home, it is almost immediately viewed as a challenge to them, no matter how nicely I say it. What do they want me to do? Lie? As for running, etc., I now get people asking me about "how I look so good at my age." (Should I be offended?) But if I answer, then I can be in trouble.

I have coworker whose wife apparently covers the walls with her race bibs.
Admittedly, there are worse vices.

Can't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes, or barefoot, or whatever...
I keep all my race bibs in a box. I figure when I am gone and just dust my kids/grandkids will get to learn a little something about me. Kinda silly, but I guess I just hope to be remembered for doing something/s that I love.

He wrote it, and WSJ published it for the same reason why anyone publishes anything so grossly inflammatory, for publicity. Most of WSJ's article are behind a paywall. Chad Stafko typically writes political commentary not about fitness.

He has received tons of responses, inspiring people to write about him on their own websites.
Oddly enough, for someone looking for publicity, he forgot to renew his website...

Lol. Everyone is after him. I've thought the stickers (especially the half) can be a bit much... but EVERY RUNNER GOING DOWN THE ROAD IS DEMANDING TO BE SEEN? Whatever... and I do it barefooted.

The bottom line? Chad is fat. That is all.

my race numbers and chip timing splits are blu tacked to the wall in my gym, no-one but me will see them there, nobody else needs to.

I also have soem cool photos of old Giro d'Italias and stuff

I am not a sticker or magnet fan on vehicles, not just running stickers or magnets. All stickers, magnets, bumper stickers, etc. I'm just not a fan of putting them my vehicle I guess.

I have my reasons but won't bore you with them. I've even gone to the extent of removing the dealership sticker of where I bought the vehicle from in the past.

I don't mind seeing them on other persons vehicles though. Some of them make me laugh, some make me shake my head and I know some of them make the owner of that vehicle proud (I respect that).

I have often thought of going into the sticker/magnet business though.

I can tell you I have said magnets and have even made my own but they are on a file cabinet in my home for me to see. I guess I'll just stick to sharing my accomplishments here with all of you instead of posting it on my car.

I proudly wear mine. If someone doesn't like it they can get over it too. I'm not usually a show off type person, quite the opposite, humble and shy. So why do I or anyone do it? I dunno, probably many reasons, none of which are probably that big of a deal or worth debating and stressing about. I wear my race shirts too. Hey they are good shirts and I rarely buy any shirt now since I get so many. I'll wear em as undershirts under my button up shirts at work too.And they work great for any physical activity - I'm wearing my Capital City Half Marathon shirt in my avatar on my mountain hiking trip.

Around the city I do often see the 13.1 / 26.2 and other stickers on cars. I've yet to see one on a big truck so I proudly wear mine on my 1-ton, just to change things up a little.

Maybe there are other trucks out there in other places but I've yet to see one.

Even us rough and tough country boys run charity races. ;)

Maybe one day a kindred spirit will park next to me, or perhaps even a soul mate that might have otherwise gone unknown? Wishful thinking I know, I can be way to optimistic at times.

I've been toying with designing a barefoot version of the bumper sticker/magnet for a while, maybe I'll bring that up again.

I don't mind those 26.3/13.1 stickers...its just a little bit of bragging really. I don't put those stickers on my truck but its ok by me...most people are couch potatoes and wouldn't know the difference between a 5k run or an Ironman triathlon. I do wear my race T-shirts proudly though...as something unique and different.

Hey, what about our stickers? I just need to get them added to the store. (The black background is transparent when printed.)

My wife used to think they were ads for radio stations.

My wife used to think they were ads for radio stations.

I forgot I was going to mention that point... I don't think the average person even knows what it means so its not like your trying to show off to everyone. More like letting other runners know your a runner to maybe. Heck even being somewhat of a runner my whole life, I don't think I knew what the race distances where until I was on this forum a couple years ago and started debating signing up for one. Mokoman is even confused on the marathon distance ;) though it might have just been a typo. I all the time see similar oval stickers with 3 letter acronyms or other things, and can't say that I know what any of them are, except for the radio station ones.

Hey, what about our stickers? I just need to get them added to the store. (The black background is transparent when printed.)

TJ - yeah I remember those now. Were they actually available? Were they going to be square or or put onto a similar oval shape? And just stickers or magnets? I suppose from your clear background description they are square as shown and only available as a sticker, which is fine, I think they look great. I was just thinking the other day when I finally got to put the 26.2 magnet on my truck how hardly any vehicles have bumpers anymore, or even metal. The idea I had floating around was also going to have 'barefoot' printed along it somehow, or maybe 'Barefoot Runners Society' though the text would be small but thats fine.

So let me see if I'm getting this

A writer is upset because he believes some people might be involved in a particular activity solely for the attention it brings them. A writer. A writer submitting an opinion piece for a public news organization wants us to know that people seeking attention bothers him.

Well damn, I don't know if that's cognitive dissonance or just plain irony.
