10-20-13 My first marathon!

Great Job Tristan, well done. I wouldn't worry too much about your form, if you had that speed and no foot soreness after then I'm green with envy.
Hey thanks Rick! Well foot soreness no, but I had plenty of rest of leg soreness after, but I'll get into that in a different thread. I also have several pics that show a few things I found odd. I know pics catch things in awkward instances but still might be worth bringing up in a different thread. Not the above pics, but I got like ~20 pics from this race.

Awesome results! Glad to hear the dates worked for you. Love to keep it natural.
Yep! There were a few spots on the race were I came across some puke... oh the smell almost made me hurl. I'm guessing maybe they had a big huge pasta dinner last night, or maybe just tried some GU's for the first time lol! I'll definitely keep dates as my primary fuel for marathons (or longer?) but I'm pretty sure I couldn't tolerate them at much faster paces, so halfs I may stick to nothing at all or perhaps liquid (I often wondered how diluted grape juice would work as apposed to something like gatorade).

Brilliant. Sounds like you made it look easy.
Thanks! I wouldnt call it easy, but I've got to say it was nice not being completely out of breath and struggling with exhaustion the whole way like I am in shorter races, even in half marathon I struggle being out of breath.

Congrats and nice time!!

Running a race in cold conditions is always tricky for us barefoot runners. I have a marathon on Nov. 17th, going to be in the low 30's. I'm going to try a new tactic, picking up a cheap pair water shoes for $12 at wal-mart and will wear thick socks just to walk to the start line and waiting in the coral, then discard them right at start time.
Yes I agree. I did the sock thing, but it wasn't enough. I have plenty of old sneakers in the closet with soles that are sperating or holes, I could have worn just to the stat line and pitched. I'll consider that next time. My other problem was I ditched the socks to quick, when the announcer came on announcing the race was going to start I pulled em off, but it was probably 15-20 minutes more from that time until I crossed the start line.

I signed up for a Thanksgiving day 4-miler, last year it was about 40ºF, so we'll see how it turns out this year.

Good luck on your marathon man, and keep the fingers crossed on the temps!

Well pooh! I was going to add this report to the home page, where it deserves to be, but it looks like it's been well played here instead, which is great too! I will still add it soon, because like I said, it deserves the spot. But can you all, please email me your race reports, so I can get them on the home page? Not mandatory, and you can still add them to the rest of the site if you wish. [email protected]

Congrats, Tristan! You are making great progress. Well done!

Been there! I remember ditching the socks at a cold race, the announcer just talked for about another 15 minutes, haha! Thanks man, appreciate it!

Hey Tristan - Awesome race report! I loved that this was your first FM and that you did it BF! I have only done one FM so far, and my time was much slower. I plan to do one early in 2014, and considering doing it BF. I know other people have, but thanks for the motivation. -

"I think I've seen some runners turn back after crossing the line and head back into the course to cool down, but I don't know if thats something that only elite get away with or what." - I 100% agree with rickwhitelaw on this - it is not cool. RW recently had an editorial on this poor etiquitte.

Glad the dates worked for you, I love going natural as well. Have you read The Feed Zone? There is a company called Skratch Labs that sells the book, but the whole philosophy is "real-foods" not sugar in a tube.

Thanks Jeff, and good luck on your next... I doubt I'd be ready again until atleast summer. I find it hard to keep mileage up in the winter, and well if the last couple weeks are any indication then my training is really going to take a hit this winter.

That never bothered me etiquette wise, I was just concerned it was kind of against the rules. To be honest I wouldnt blame anyone for doing it there, as they dont provide any way to do it otherwise, and I'm sure it was not good to end the way I did. Luckily smaller races arent usually all fenced off and dont take 10+ minutes just to get through the finish area.

My last race ended with a dead-end road. The announcer kept asking people to keep moving, but it was poorly designed people-flow. I was mainly talking about the people who do a "vicotory lap" in the reverse direction. I can see how it can be demotivational. (Especially if you cross paths with them several minutes out.) Still impressed by your time / barefoot and the report. Thanks again for sharing.
