Ok, runners don't hear it as much as cyclist do, but I've still had a few people tell me to get off a road that has very little traffic and to run on a very dangerous or crowded sidewalk instead.
This cyclist was ticketed for riding outside of the "bike lane", and when he decided to stick to the bike lane after that he documented the results in this video.

There was a bicyclist in my small town who was firmly spoken to by an officer who also didn't know the specific laws regarding riding in the city. Fortunately, this cyclist knew someone who makes it a point to help other bikers know the real local laws. I keep hearing more stories of police acting because they think something is illegal that isnt!

That was hysterical! So it's not against the law to ride your bike outside of the bike lane, but you can be ticketed for doing so? Huh? WTF?

You can be ticketed by an officer that does not know the law. You will be found innocent by the judge in a court of law.
Oh, and talking about judges! Kwami's going away for 28 years! Some judges know their stuff!

And in defence of police officers.....I've run into several that were ignorant of the laws, but I don't fault them. The training doesn't teach them all the statutes etc, and that's why attorneys can easily rip them apart in court. A good friend of the family is a rookie officer and I've followed his training from the two year associates degree through the academy and on the job training. At 22 years of age he's a hard worker and trying to be fair, but no way would he know about the legality of barefoot driving and living were it not for me! I try to educate those attempting to bust me but its still very dicey arguing with a cop!

If you look at the video, you can see the lazy cop (doesn't want to get wet, so he tickets the bicycle rider while sitting inside his nice, dry car) reading from the biking ticket the fines that can be incurred. So if it's legal to ride your bike outside of the bike lane, then why would some government office go to the trouble of actually printing up biking tickets with the fines printed on them? Is it a matter of the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing? Or is that someone higher up in the NYC government is trying to screw the public?

The fines are for illegal stuff, like disobeying signal, etc. NOT for not using the bike lane. The cop was wrong.

Whether the cop was right or wrong, he clearly states it's a "bicycle summons." "...it's a bicycle summons. A bicycle summons is for not riding in the bicycle lane."

I agree "in concept" with the cyclist, but I'm betting he got the ticket mostly for being obnoxious and argumentative. The video didn't show what he was doing before the ticket. I'll bet he was just cruising down the middle of the travel lane looking for a confrontation. I'd give him more cred if he was actually wearing a helmet.

Yea, I know. More ridiculousness!
