So I was looking for a thread on this and didn't see one....sorry if I duplicated an existing thread.

After looking on line, it appears that I have bursitis. So the pain is on the outside of my hip.

I think that it was the result of having a weird gait during the marathon. My ankle on that leg is also really sore. So I think that I've been jarring my leg when I walk/run. It seems to go away if I try to maintain a "gliding" gait. Well, not go away, but it is lessened quite a bit.

Has anyone else had this before? Just wanted to see what your experiences are if you have experienced it. Basically the pain is on the outside of my hip. It does not extend down my leg or across my back. It is very sore when I walk, but sitting or lying down it is just a very faint dull pain. I noticed that when I went to the gym today it didn't hurt as much when I was walking, but I was also wearing running shoes and was trying to concentrate on my gait. So I am going to do some time on the elliptical machine to help keep it moving, apply a little ice while resting, and possibly a naproxyn or two to make sure the swelling doesn't interfere with healing.

Anyone else have this problem?

swelling means it's healing. don't use drugs kids, drugs are bad, mmm, ok?
i go through hip and back pain myself and am trying to figure it all out. i can point you to some videos to see if those help. look through Dr. Stoxen's website, http://teamdoctorsblog.com/. he shows how to release the glute medius which we can confuse for hip or back pain. i can tell you after using that technique my pain lessened. i still have some work to do there. look through videos something like 74-82.

http://www.do-it-yourself-joint-pain-relief.com/ came across this the other day. helpful so far.

i hope some of this helps you. i thought i had another link but forgot while looking around dr stoxen's site!

Going through the same here as we speak and this is my second time around.
The first time I did physical therapy for months and months but it didn't work so they ave me a cortisone shot.
This time around I found myself a new therapist and he's working wonderfuly in only three visits and my hip/back has never feel better-ever! there is hardly any pain at all and I feel like I should be running by now but the therapist says-no way Jose not yet even if things feel great is better to be cautious and whole heartly agree.
I haven't run I think for two weeks this week BUT I was told yesterday that I could do the bike now and depending how the biking goes then I could start running.:joyful:
I call that a huge progress.
Maybe you should consider aviding any form of exercise do some hip/glutes strengthing in the meantime.

Thanks for the feedback. It is much better now. However, because of that, I think that I popped the hell out of my knee. I don't think that I tore anything since my knee is still pretty solid, there was no swelling, and the pain was minimal (after the initial drop to the ground). Damn that marathon screwed me up.

You self-diagnosed butsitis? That's a very complex area of the body, there can be a lot of causes of pain in the hips, or compound causes. I guess it doesn't really matter though as the therapy is basically going to be the same regardless. But bursitis is a pretty serious condition that can be a long-term problem.

Something that'll help in the future is a good hip strength routine before every run. My go-to exercises are side plank dips followed by leg scissor lifts. Works wonders, really!

I discovered that I was carrying tension or kind of clenching my hips when I walked and ran. It seemed to get worse when I tried for a higher cadence when running. A couple of weeks of consciously trying to relax my hips (my mental image is slouching my hips) and not worrying too much about cadence has brought great improvement.
