Starting from the ground up!

Welcome to the BRS, Becky :)

Yeah, where in Upstate NY are you located? I grew up in Rockland County and people in the city thought THAT was Upstate, lol.

When you call yourself "a marathoner", it conjuers up an image of a pretty serious runner. Like, the kind that runs fast, lol. And trains according to scientific training plans. And chooses races on the proper weekend of a training cycle. And tries to win awards... etc.

What I mean is, you might be in a pretty small subcategory of ppl looking to make the switch to barefoot. You also seem like a really good candidate for it, given your dislike of shoes, so I hope you do make the decision to chuck the orthopedic boots and 'start over' again!
Yeah, I've been told that anything this side of the Tappan Zee is "upstate". I'm about 3hrs up rt 17. There's a nice, very small, marathon not far from Rockland County, close to Port Jervis, in PA, called the Lackawaxen Marathon. It's mostly through state game lands and along the Delaware. Yeah, I used to run and race by training program, regardless of what I felt like. Not that I was very fast or anything. My goal last year was to run a BQ and planned on running 3 spring marathons (3 in 71 days, and did it!), but this hip injury really prevented any sort of speed, at all. I couldn't flex or extend my left leg enough get any power and a very limited range of motion. Reading about barefoot running and the whole listen to your body philosophy behind this type of running seems much more natural, enjoyable, and hopefully less likely to leave you with lasting chronic injuries. Thanks for the post!

When I made the switch to running barefoot, I was was also running a lot of miles, a couple marathons every year, and getting into an ultra here and there. I was injured when I made the switch, I just switched because I didn't fell like spending $100 every month on shoes. It took me about a year to build back up to my previous mileage. I could probably have gotten there sooner, except I sometimes pushed myself too hard and would have to take a break and start over again. So you really need to take your time and build up slowly. It took almost another year to start breaking my previous PRs.
Good luck with your races this year! Amazing times!!

Another New Yorker Welcome. I'm up in Spencerport.
Your story sounds like so many of us. I was injured just over two years ago. I decided to try a little BF running on my treadmill, and loved it. I started doing 1/4 mile every other day. If you are like the rest of us you will try to progress too quickly. It takes time to adjust TMTS too much too soon will cause TOFP top of foot pain and possible stress fractures, also the calves and tendons need to adjust to the lack of heel lift. Good luck.:barefoot:
Enjoy the Myrtle Beach Marathon!! My husband and I had planned on running that one in 2009, but it was canceled due to a freak snow storm, dumping a whopping 2 inches of snow! Laughable by northern standards. It ended up being a beautiful day, 45 degrees and sunny! Good luck!

Hello Becky and everyone else! I too am new to BRS. I decided to ditch the sneakers and pretty much almost all my footwear except for an occasional pair of socks (very rare) and my leather slippers (I don't run in them, they're just to get me from the house to the car and the car to my destination when it is in the teens or lower.) In my barefoot training I recently hit 3.4 miles in 30 minutes and am taking it easy listening to feet and everything upward from there.

Why didn't I start my own hello in the "New Member Introductions" well I see you're a fellow Upstate New Yorker, I'm west of Binghamton right on the PA/NY line.

I've got a treadmill as well but vow not to ever step foot on it again...... I keep it going for my wife though, she loves the treadmill, I despise it.

I've gotten a lot of looks since starting my barefoot running journey and I'm not so certain January was the best time of year to start out, but I'm loving it.

Welcome Otoole
It seems most of the bare feet runners are a ways from Rochester. If you are coming up this way send me a message, we could go for a run.
Like you I dislike the treadmill, however, with upstate weather I enjoy using it for bare feet running when it's too cold outside.

Will do, I actually go up to Rochester every once in a while. Last time I was up there I hit a fleet feet store, but not for shoes. It was before I decided to run barefoot and picked up a pair of compression pants for my IT Band issues. Haven't had any IT issues in well over 2 months - December I was shod and the beginning of January I kicked the sneakers off. Although my mileage isn't where it was with sneakers on, I'm alright with it. I know the miles will ultimately climb back up in time.

BTW, the treadmill we bought last year has been nothing but a nightmare..... Nordic Trak X9i
