Hi everyone,

3 Blisters on my right foot, but I started barefoot running on the streets of Broome! :)

I lasted only 100 meters (I know not impressive at all). A couple of years back I was traveling down the west coast here in Australia and I started running barefoot on the beaches. 8 - 10 k's, no problems, no injuries. I arrived in Perth and thought it would be better to put some shoes on in case I'm not near a beach. I only ran about 10 minutes and gave up....
I bought myself a new pair of running shoes and started again in March this year. Mainly on foot paths and roads but..... Achilles tendonitis. Very painful, especially in the mornings. I used kinesio tape but still sore. I bought a foam roller, yes some relief. When I moved to Broome in June I started running barefoot on the beach (8-12 k's) again and did 1-2 runs with shoes on the street. Still sore.
Then I came across THE book, 'Born to Run' and read more about barefoot running. I was thinking to buy some VVF or other minimalist shoes but after reading Ken Bob's book I decided to start barefoot. I walk a lot barefoot or with thongs on. Even at work if the boss is not around I kick off my shoes ;) So, last Sunday I had set my mind to running 100 meters on rough bitumen. Okay, now I'm gonna be very honest, I had to stop twice because it hurt too much. When I came home and looked at my soles I saw three blisters. One big one in the middle of the ball of my foot and two on my toes. And the middle of the ball of my left foot was sore as well but no blister. I didn't run the next day but the day after I went to the beach and I didn't feel the blisters. I thought I run a couple of meters on the street as well but I couldn't, still too painful.

I truly believe in running barefoot and I will continue and hopefully, maybe one day I'm able to run 10-20 k's anywhere barefoot or even a marathon!

Oops, I didn't mean to make such a long story......

Hi Chrizzz, and welcome! Are you a He's a Chrizzz or a She's a Chrizzz? (Never mind, Mam, I just popped over to look at your profile.) Also, I just looked up where Broome is located. Holy Smokes! You're almost closer to Jakarta than to Adelaide! Are you indeed a 2,000K drive from Perth or am I reading the map wrong? What do you do there! What does anyone do out there? Aside from being at the end of a very long drive, the place looks fantastic. Plenty of beaches to choose from and probably no lack of room to run. Wow!

Were your blisters just from the roughness of the bitumen or was it hot as well? Running earlier in the AM can help with the temp. Really working on your form will be the key to avoiding the other kind of blistering. If it was a matter of pure foot skin delicacy, you might be needing to build up a bit more slowly, and start with walking around BF before tring to run any sort of distances. Good for you for sticking with it! FWIW, I am a proponent of the every other day school of running. I think doing so gives the ole bod a chance to recuperate more and helps avoid TMTS injuries.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for your post. Yes we're very close to Indonesia up here. It's a paradise, Broome and around :) And yes, Broome is a little more than 200k's north of Perth. We are far away from a city. In the wet season (now), Broome has around 14000 people, in the dry season that number will triple easily because of all the tourists. I work at the post office. No street delivery here, so lots of sorting. At the moment I have 5am starts for a couple of weeks so no early morning runs. I think I got the blisters because of the hot bitumen as well as the roughness. I had another run the other day, this time on the foot path and I ran 1km without blisters. This was early morning. First I did a 4km run on the beach. I noticed that I have a forefoot landing with my right foot and a midlanding with my left foot. Strange..... I might try 1.5 to 2 km on the foot path next time

Welcome Chrizzz. Broome sounds like a fantastic place to do a bit of beach running. My uncle lived up there for a year or two while he was doing a bit of a 'grey nomad' thing, and he raves about the place.

Hot bitumen would be a killer, not that I see that much of it down here in Victoria. :)
