We Need Your Votes Because Your Opinion Matters:
International Barefoot Running Day
2013

Ok, this is the long and the short of it. We have been getting some interesting comments pertaining to the selection of the date for :barefoot: International Barefoot Running Day :barefoot:. This will be the 3rd year running of this ever expanding and very important event.

Earlier in the year we had members expressing their concern about holding it on the first Sunday of May (the 5th)because it conflicts with Cinco de Mayo. So it was suggested to be moved to the second Sunday of May (the 12th) which is Mother's Day. Now with this move we heard an outcry from other members. So this is our dilemma. We obviously cannot please everybody all the time but we need to come to a resolution quickly as arrangements have to commence as soon as possible in the new year.

So we are going to have a little poll, and I need everybody's input (and this is serious, as the world will implode like it was 12/21/12 if we do not get a proper consensus) so we can finalize this.

These are the arguements for and against the 5th of May:
For:
  • The last 2 years (and only 2 years) that we have been holding this event it has fell on the first Sunday of May. We need consistency to make this a bonafide event. We cannot be changing the weekend every year, it just does not make sense.
  • Cinco de Mayo is a celebration, why not honour this celebration with our own celebration of 'barefootedness', running and health. Then top it off with a beer or 'pop' (what us Winnipegger's call a cocktail) to celebrate both.
Against:
  • Cinco de Mayo falls on May 5th (see note above)
  • I am sure there are more so I hope the members that have a concern to pipe in with their votes (I apologize I am Canadian and Scottish so I am really not that familiar with the tradition of Cinco de Mayo, but I am intrigued so please enlighten me).
These are the arguements for and against the 12th of May:

For:
  • It is not Cinco de Mayo.
  • Sorry this is all I got.
Against:
  • It is Mother's Day. This causes a little bit of a concern for me as it is tradition for my wife to run a very long run on Mother's Day and I watch the kids and play aide station along her route. This would really put a damper on my IBRD events. Further to this a lot of spouses would have a hard time convincing their significant others that running is more important than their special day.
  • The later we go into May the hotter it gets in some areas of the world, so this could create a problem as well.
But as I said above this is a democracy (well sort of) and everybody's opinion counts (again sort of), so with that we are going to conduct a little poll. Please post your opinion and preference on this thread and I will keep track of them and we will go with the majority rules on this one. The poll will be ran until Dec 30, 2012 at 7:16 CST and not a second longer.

Please vote (only once please) as this will be the basis of us determining which day we hold IBRD on.

Remember be safe out there. :D

I live in Texas and Cinco is a big deal. I see zero reason why we can't have our day on the same day as Cinco. In fact there are already a lot of races on that day because it's a fun day to have a celebration run. Leave it on the day it's been so twenty years from now we can all say it's ALWAYS been on the same day...even back in 2012 with the great Cinco De Mayo debate.

For Americans, Cinco de Mayo is basically Mexican St. Patrick's Day - a reason to drink to excess and act goofy. Instead of green beer, it's Corona, Negro Modelo, Dos Equis (Stay Thirsty, My Friends) and Sombrero's. And Tequila. And Margarita's. It's also reason to further butcher the Spanish language as we try to drunk order from Taco Bell. (Note that I understand the historical significance of CdM; I'm just saying we've made it into a drinking holiday). So, no reason why IBRD can't be on CdM.

Lee, we are afraid that the pavement may be too hot in late May. On Cinco de Mayo, I don't see why people can't run in the morning and get drunk in the evening if they want. I don't understand why some people complained about the date, just MHO.

JSG, we will definitely have tech shirts for sale and in your size. Around January 1, we will begin our 2013 IBRD Tee Shirt Design Contest. (Details forthcoming) Once the winner has been chosen, we will add the winning design to our store. There, everyone will be able to purchase tee shirts (and other gear) if they want. Thanks in advance for your contribution as every purchase makes a little money for the BRS.

I shared this link on our main Facebook page, so maybe we will get more votes in.

Nah, you should be numb enough by then. ;)

So does that mean May 5 will now be called "Internacional Dias de Correr Descalzo (IDCD)"?
I hope none of that pinata candy is too jagged. It's gonna hurt when I accidentally step on it after a few Coronas.

BWAHAHHAAAA!!!
