In 2014 I decided to try running once again as a way to stay in shape. In the past each effort has lead to pain. I've done lots of long distance hiking and know many different levels of discomfort. This wasn't soreness, something just didn't feel right, so I would get discouraged and stop running.
When I first read about the minimalist approach to running I though I would give it a try. After all it talked about how to run and I've always had questions when it came to my running form. I now believe I was a huge over strider. I had been watching the runners around me and saw what beautiful long strides they took as the they gracefully flew past me like they had wings on their feet.
Things progressed wonderfully, no injuries and I loved feeling the ground beneath my feet. So much so, that I would often walk barefoot home from work with shoes in my hand. But still, the feeling that this wasn't right prevailed in my mind. Society thinks poorly of those who walk barefoot and looks down upon them like they are homeless bums. Besides you can't go into stores, restaurants or drive barefoot. Or so I thought.
When I stumbled upon the barefooters.org/ I learned how wrong I was. More than that, there were 100's of other people that had chosen to be barefoot as a life style change. I then decided to join the barefooter ranks in the middle of winter of February 2016. It will be a while before I can be shoe free, but I am looking forward to warmer weather and taking baby steps in the meantime.Interact
