Pain Killers = Joint Killers?

Just read your blog post after following the link from Facebook, and came here to post a link to it. Looks like you beat me to it!
We've written here in the BRS before about the pitfals of NSAIDS and healing, but at least now we are becoming aware of alternative meds that may not do more damage.
Has Celebrex been completely cleared of any of the cardiac problems Vioxx was implemented in?
And, was Vioxx really o.k. considering it's effectiveness but just wrongfully banned due to a level of untoward side effects that most prescription meds also display?
As I get more and more arthritic with age I've got to start paying attention!
My daily 81 mg aspirin is apparently neutral to my joints , and I rarely take other NSAIDS except short term for acute injuries.
I too take glucosamine/chondroiten/MSM despite no evidenced based proof of efficacy, and am assuming that I will eventually have to take a NSAID just to cope daily.

All NSAIDs give the heart problems, except aspirin. Aspirin is both a COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor, while the others do just COX-2. Vioxx was just the NSAID-of-the-day when these problems were discovered, so it is the one that got the bad reputation. Also, you know how aspirin thins the blood? Turns out if you take an NSAID first, the NSAID binds to the receptor for blood thinning, so the aspirin no longer does so. I've read that if you take aspirin to thin the blood platelets, it should be done 4 hours before an NSAID, so that the aspirin can get there first.

In my latest blog entry, I look at some science that suggests that certain pain killers also kill our joints.

Ibuprofen and naproxen are on the list.
Oh my God, and I am treating my left foot joint pain with Ibuprofen, your article makes sense. I will stop immediately and better begin to taking collagen supplements. Thanks for the advice.
