She wore a pair of Merrell Pure Gloves, just FYI.

Last year, my six year old got "Needs Improvement" in phys ed because, as the phys ed teacher observed, "Ingrid is selective regarding which activities she will give her full effort." She has steadfastly resisted participating in kids races. "NOOOOOOOOOO!"

Yesterday, she had to run The Mile in school, and we were wondering how it was going to go. Surprisingly, she woke up excited about the whole thing. Yay!

She killed it! She placed seventh in her class of 26, and was the 2nd girl. She claims her time was 10:20. Not bad for a girl who flunked gym in kindergarten.

But here's what I really had to share - her race report.

Her: "Luis, and he's really mean, he pushed me out of the way so he could get ahead of me!"

Me: "Oh no! So, Luis beat you because he pushed you? He was probably just really mad about getting chicked. Maybe you can beat him in the spring."

Her: "Luis didn't beat me! I beat Luis. He got ahead of me, but I stayed behind him. Then, on the last lap, when I passed him I said, 'Boy, Luis, you must be getting really tired from running so fast!' AND IT WORKED! He stopped running and started walking. But I didn't stop - I sprinted to the finish."

Me: "Wait a second - so you went up to Luis and psyched him out by telling him he was probably tired so you could get ahead?!?!?! Did you really do that?!?!"

Her: "Well, yeah. WhaddamIgonnado? He's bigger than me, and it's not like I could push him, MOM!!!! So I figured I'd just tell him he was tired and he'd believe me."

SHE WILL GROW UP TO RULE THE WORLD.
You must be beaming.
Congrats!!!
I too struggle to get my daughter excited about physical activity. What an accomplishment for your daughter!!!

Wow! Boys don't learn those tricks until...well, in their late 20's, assuming they ever twig. She's gonna be a tough one. Did she feel OK the day after?

I think so - she flunked gym for not trying, but she's a strong hiker and a fast walker. On Mothers Day, we climbed to the highest point in Massachusetts - Mt. Greylock. The hike isn't tough, but it is long - about 4 miles to the summit, only we took a route down that involved some stream crossings and hands-and-knees climbing. Nine mile hike? No problem.

So awesome! way to intimidate the weak sex! :p that'll teach him.
You must be a proud momma for sure.

Hee hee, that would of been fantastic to see.

Nice story! I didnt even think they ran a mile in first grade... I have a 6 yr old as well, our big accomplishment so far is just getting him to learn to ride without training wheels but he still can't start or stop by himself.

"...He got ahead of me, but I stayed behind him."

I am so using that line to describe every race I run in for the rest of my life.

"Pirate - how'd you do in the race?"
"I did good! 3/4 of the field got ahead of me, but I stayed behind them!"

:D

Nice report.

In some circles flunking gym is a badge of honor.
I hated it, especially in HS, and weazeled every angle I could come up with to avoid it. I had a doctor's excuse last me months - poor boy, too weak to play whatever lame game they were doing - while I ran miles every afternoon at CC practise.
