What is your addiction?

15 years later, I'm still at it--2-3 shots a day. Oh well, I guess they still haven't decided if it's good or bad for you.

I can think of other habbits where 2-3 shots is much more damaging to your health...

BL, I just saw something the other day that said 2 cups of black coffee a day is actually good for you, but like everything else in life, moderation is key. I wish I could remember where I saw that, I would provide a link for you. It just stood out in memory because coffee is something I love. It was something about a new study that was recently concluded... Damn I hate having a terrible memory.

Lee (and Nick), check out ineedcoffee.com. it's a great source for addicts lovers of the sacred bean. it's got everything from how to roast your own beans at home (my winter endeavour this year) to getting espresso bar quality results from your home espresso maker.

It's like getting the keys to Willy Wonka's recipe box.

Energy drinks for me. I gave up on them before El Scorcho but had to drink some to get from New Orleans to Austin without falling asleep and it is starting all over. I added it up and I spend thousands on them every year. Now I gotta kick it again. Yawn.

Strong black coffee, dark beer, dark whisky, dark rye bread, dark chocolate, dried fruit, deep dark red wine. See a trend here?

I'm also getting addicted to the quest to find myself a new car after I wrapped my other one round a tree a few weeks ago.

I forgot spicy chickpea stew, one pot, plenty of flavour, results in full belly quickly. I like full belly

i'm addicted to strong tea, coffee, beer, wine, women, food, and facebook.

coffee being good for you? i have to wonder who funded those studies. we can't accept science at face value because somebody has to pay for those studies. yes, call me cynical and skeptical but everyone values money and popularity. not to mention their job.

Have another cup!
I'm with Mike. Health, Nutrition, and Fitness research can often be garbage, because there's a fair bit of money to be made, and plenty of venues to publish flimsy conclusions. Coffee, like alcohol and cigarettes, is a toxin--you can overdose and die if you drink too much of it--so I'm always skeptical when someone says a little bit is good for you. The funny thing is I spent the first 15 years of adulthood fine without it, so I know I would get by fine if I dropped the habit now, but I just can't seem to find a good enough reason to, thanks to all those semi-persuasive, well-funded studies.

This article from mayoclinics gives a nice and balanced summary of recent research about health risks/benefits associated with coffee.

(I drink two cups of black coffee in the morning, and that coffee is so delicious that I don't want one sip of the black drab called coffee at work.)
I take it one step further: I don't drink coffee unless it's espresso. It's the barefoot running of coffee.

Hey BL, you said you eat nuts for breakfast didn't you, because they are a "healthy" food? Have you ever eaten a whole bunch of nuts at one sitting? It can make you really sick if you do, even without a peanut allergy... Don't ask me how I know this, cause you don't want to know. All I have to say about it is my wife does not allow me to buy Costco sized nuts anymore... I. can't. stop. myself... Anyhow, the point being that in small doses something can be fine and healthy, but when we over do it we can poison ourselves. Ever drank too much water too fast? Same thing. Knew a guy when I was serving over in Afghanistan who got water poisoning because we were forced to do what's called "forced hydration". We were made to chug a canteen of water every hour on the hour. The problem happened that he kept drinking water in between those times... I think he just wanted a way out so he could go home. Anyhow, you can see my point of too much of a good thing is bad.

too much of anything is bad. balance.

none of us lives in a lab. we can't control for variables and discard data like they can. you are the lead scientist and subject in your life. you are an experiment of n=1 and have to figure out what works for you. studies are helpful but not the gospel.

Unless it's chronic lead poisoning from living too close to a highway in the 60s, or perhaps cyanides from living on an old gas works.

Otherwise, nietzsche was almost there

Thanks for the tip.
Will check it out presently,

with my pump-driven machine
down to a science.
