People's reactions when you run

I stay up that late. My wife and I work evenings or nights so we run after work. Going to the gym is also great during those hours since so few people are there.
Interesting. I worked nights for two years a long time ago but didn't do too well with it. I'm an early bird by nature. But it is interesting to see how the nocturnal world works.

Maybe if you made your bedroom completely pitch black with blackout curtains?

Since I last posted in this thread, I've stopped even using the earbuds on my runs. I can actually hear the E25K prompts just fine with the phone in my pocket and turned up louder. Also it vibrates at the prompts, so that helps.

Hey Rich I'm not on straight nights, but we rotate back and forth. Sometimes I wish I was on a steady schedule, I actually like the nights better, but then again I like being normal half the time too lol.

I really havent had any outlandish comments or anything. Sure there are a few folks here and there that say something like 'and I thought I was tough' or they point and say 'no shoes'. To be honest when I first started last year I was so self conscious I'd usually do my walk or runs after dark. As far as neighbors go - well I dont really know any of them too well except maybe the closest, but most of their houses sit so far back off the road I doubt they know its me running or even that I am not wearing any footwear.

I get the most amount of comments from coworkers since the word spreads fast I am a crazy barefoot runner. Most just seem dumfounded, and ask what possible reason I have for doing such a thing.

@Jen oh dont remind me... last time I ran right after a rainstorm and there were stretches where slugs were no more than 6" apart for like 50 feet or so. I squashed a many of them.

@Lance welcome aboard!:D

There is nothing nastier than getting slug guts stuck between your toes! Lol.

oh damn! my dog ran down the trail in front of me today and a rabbit popped out behind him. i called my dog and the rabbit stopped. as soon as my dog turned the rabbit when off the trail and up a steep hill. it was awesome. too bad he's too slow to catch those. rabbits are good eatin.

I enjoy the comments, at first it bothered me now I just roll with it and I always mix up my reply to them. I ran past a park bench with a little old lady sitting on the bench. She said hey sonny you get your shoes on right now ! why are you doing it. I said with a smile its just the way God made me , barefoot. She did not have a reply so I guess it made her think.

So, after three months, I now have three comments under my belt:

1) "What happened?" Like I met with some sort of tragedy that led to me walking around barefoot
2) "You forgot your shoes!" To which I replied: "They were stolen by Ninja's" - that got a laugh
3) On longer runs, I do the first 1/2 BFR and the second 1/2 shod. So I passed a couple of ladies on the way out while I was still BFR; after I put on my shoes, I encountered them on the return trip, one of them said "You look better now with shoes on!".

So, there you go...

Didn't recognize you with the new photo.

I haven't gotten many comments lately, just running alone, but I am really going to cause an accident. My legs were a little sore after a hard trail run 2 days before, so along my field by the highway, I ran backwards. Caused several cars and trucks to slow down. It was also fun seeing the look on my dog's face. Even he thought I was crazy.

Awesome! Must be a pretty unobstructed trail, eh? Or did you actually fall on your butt and forgot to mention that? Or were you afraid to mention falling on your butt because this thread might turn into a butt-crack thread, too??? ;)

I didn't fall, but I was thinking about it. Nice powdery clay would make for some good anti-chafe if I would have fallen on my butt. Barefoot, topless, backwards, 6 dogs. Anyone top that? (no, I am not going naked next time, but maybe I'll work on a goat or chicken to follow me)

One comment I received this spring hiking in Zion with my family (wife and 4 kids) and my reply: Where are your shoes? With this many kids, I can't afford shoes.

I usually receive many more comments barefoot hiking vs. barefoot running. In the Grand Canyon, I finally caught up to my son. He said "Jeez you're slow, will you put your sandals on now?" Sure I was going slow, but stopping to talk to everyone added a lot of time. Put my sandals on and still got a lot of comments. "Can't believe you are hiking in those. Don't you worry about spraining your ankle?"
