100-Up challenge

Was browsing through the forum posts and read this one:

http://www.thebarefootrunners.org./threads/poor-rwol-what-the-heck-is-going-on-over-there.6786/

which gave a link to a NYT article by Chris McDougall, which mentioned the 100-Up system ,after a google it led to this site:

http://hundredup.com/the-100-up-challenge/

Basically a system for training running form and actually cardio as well developed by an English Miler record holder in the 1800s.

The site has a challenge, which I am going to do. Anyone on here done this or fancy doing it?
I've actually been doing this for a long time while skipping rope...I used to do martial arts,we used to skip rope as a warm up.Then you'd be skipping rope all winter 'cause its the easiest way to keep in shape during the winter(with all the rain,no fun running outside). We used to do the running in place with the high knee raises as an exercise too.So somewhere I put 1 and 1 together and started doing this while skipping rope(this is at a fairly high pace)for 3 or 4 minutes at a time as a way of interval training I would skip rope and mix it up with that exercise. If you can do that for half an,hour you can can run 7miles easy:)

I used to do something similar in karate without the jump rope most times, but I think the purpose was more for kicks and overall conditioning. It's interesting that you did find it translates into improved running as well.

It works for me,I can jump rope indoors all winter and in the spring or anytime I like get out and run for the same amount of time as skipping rope no sweat.I just meant to say that if you can skip rope for a certain amount of time you can easily run for the same duration,it's just that as an interval training I would do that exercise while skipping rope.As far as I know all the track guys do that exercise running in place bringing the knees up that high.Or as you mentioned,in tae-kwon do we did it to improve the speed of raising your legs for that resulted in a higher kicking rate, which in tae-kwon do is pretty important:)

Thats interesting Robin, skipping is something I've never really tried and as I said I do need something to replace my barefoot runs when its wet outside so I may give it a try after I've spent some time doing the 100-up. I'm just really interested to see if it works for me. To be fair to McDougall I think he was really putting it forward as a "form improver" method rather than as a way of improving the muscles used(ie: by doing squats etc) during barefoot running?

Yes I guess so(good form is everything, not only when running),you should give it a go with the rope skipping in winter. What I do is skip rope all yaer round. When weather permits I run but even then I skip rope a couple times a week (10-15min or so)just so it doesn't take so long to adjust in the fall and winter.Like I said, the time you can skip rope you can easily run, still minde your feet when going out for the first time after a stretch of indoor activity.I skip barefoot too, mind your feet, the leather rope hurts;)

I love the rain. If I didn't run in the rain I probably wouldn't run much.

You should move to belgium or the uk Nick. You'd get your wish most of the time :cool:230 days of rain my brother...Sometimes I get sick of it not just do I have to dry myself of I take my dog on every run he gets soaking wet too.IN the house he doesn't get why can't get on the sofa ,being wet and all...:p

I'm in Oregon and we get a ton of rain too, not quite that much (I think we are in the 160-170 range), but I would welcome it as long as we kept the relatively mild winters. I hate snow and ice and I hate over heating on runs. I used to love running when it was warm but something in my body changed and I just don't handle it well now.
