Aim of the study:
To compare if the risk factors associated with Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (shin splints) differ between minimal footwear and conventional running shoes.

Inclusion criteria:
- Running in minimal footwear for more than 6 months
- Running >8km a week
- Injury free

What will be tested?
- Plantar pressure using pressure insoles during a 2min run on a treadmill.
- Medial (inner) foot arch height.
- Hip range of motion.

When?
One testing session lasting 45min in a biomechanics lab in Dublin City University beginning at the end Feb-March.
Date and time can be arranged to suit (including weekends).

Interested in participating?
Contact [email protected] or message me privately here.

I would greatly appreciate the support as it has been difficult to find minimal shoe runners in Ireland. I'm a final year student and this is my thesis so it is very important I get enough participants to get accurate findings. There is also a lack of research within the area of long term adaption to minimal footwear and the effects this may have on the development of medial tibial stress syndrome.

If you run with others who wear minimal footwear or know anyone who does in Ireland please let them know of this study.

I look forward to hearing back from anyone that is interested.

Many thanks!

Hi Kirsty,
-just to clarify: is this restricted to footwear users?...:barefoot:

Hello, thanks for contacting. If you habitually run barefoot but have minimal shoes you can wear for them study that would be good. Alternatively I will be providing minimal shoes for those who need it on the day (depending if I have your size shoe or not).
Are you based in Ireland or about to travel for the testing session? I can arrange a date and time to suit you including weekends.

Hi Kirsty -Thanks for clarifying.
I think that puts me outside the scope of your sample as I don't do any running in minimalist shoes -all my miles are done barefoot (i.e. skin to ground).
Hopefully you'll get some minimal runners to chime in & volunteer though. Good luck with the project...:)

If you are struggling to find local participants, could you not go "on the road" with the equipment?

I had a quick glance at the study on barefoot.ie. Was wondering if you could just meet people at a local gym/treadmill and take the measurements/apply the plantar pressure sensor at locations outside Dublin/Ireland/UK? Presumably it would greatly increase your potential pool of candidates and be a fun "road-trip".

I'm in Scotland if you "go mobile"!
