Wow! I can certainly see why you'd have a poor opinion of shoes after that. Sometimes I feel lucky that I have such narrow feet so I never developed bunions or other issues from narrow toe boxes because to me those toe boxes were still plenty wide. A good friend of mine who's done some trail ultras is trying to get into sandal and unshod running but really self-conscious about his feet because they're wide and after 4 decades of pointy toe boxes he's got nasty, massive bunions on his big toe joints.

I too have narrow feet, but I never developed bunions, even during my high heel wearing days when I was much younger.

Here in Finland we have the same issue with winter. Many of us solve it by running just in socks. Wool socks or maybe double in cold days. For slush and wet snow Sealskinz or similar waterproof, and maybe other socks over them to add traction.

I've thought about this, but while the socks may have traction on the ground, i would worry about my feet sliding around in the socks, which they already do when just walking around my house. The only ones that don't do this are my injinji socks... :(

I thought the same thing, but I never had that problem. I think the type of material plays a factor.

and doctors...

I don't fault all shoes. "Shoes are tools," as Jason would say. There's nothing wrong with relying on a healthy pair when needed.
