my favourite is stone, sand is tiring and also a little bit boring for me, also u have to go to the beach and most cities dont have beaches

grass is cool, however the only place i get hurt was in the considered safe grass, i stepped in a stick tiny that pierce through my sole, that was so painful

never have any problem in normal streets, i dont like gravel thou, too imcorfortable and little bit painful
 
My favorite right now is actually gravel, because I have trouble with being in the habit of pounding and gravel has been teaching me so well how to run lightly. My least favorite is smooth, hard surfaces, like concrete because I fall into my old pounding habits and tend to hurt myself. I also love some of the narrower trails around here that haven't been muddied up by the mountain bikes.

I like dirt paths.
Sand as running track for horses is nice;
Sand as beach is awful.
Grass is certainly not safe: there are often hidden stones, thistles or nettles or even deep holes you can't see, but it cools the feet down after a run on hot asphalt. But then there is grass and grass: Special grass underground for sport events such as football or tennis should be much safer for bare feet than say a cow meadow.
Recent Asphalt is great;
old and worn out asphalt is not nice, but good training underground.

gravel?? seriously gravel??????????????? but thats so painfull

Mud, of the just proper viscosity, depth and temperature.
But in a pinch, almost any kind of mud will do!
its comfortable but also dirty i tend to avoid cause then im embarrased of going later barefoot full of dirt haha but its cool, i once got into a big mud i almost lost a shoes haha i was in shoes, large history

yes old asphalt is painful, similar to gravel, and hurts, i mean u cant run for long distances in old asphalt without being hurt, horse wear shoes for that reason those metal pieces

recent asphalt is great i agree but not very common
 
I'm finding I like asphalt that's a couple years old - you know, the stuff that's past the "fresh and smooth" stage, but not quite to the "feels like gravel" stage.

For a while I despised running on chipseal, but now I'm finding I don't mind it as much as I used to. Perhaps, like with coarse asphalt and gravel, it was just a matter of getting used to it.
 
I recently ran on freshly laid asphalt. It was pretty nice but a bit dirty on my soles! Errant asphalt particles on the sidewalk required me to be alert to where I was stepping. Trail running might be something for me to try when the weather gets warmer. I am gravitating towards concrete sidewalks. In my neighborhood, some of the sidewalks are older so there is a mix of smooth and rough surfaces to experience. A big portion of the sidewalk and trail around the lake has been refurbished over the last few years so those surfaces make for good running.

I ran over freshly laid asphalt once on a warm summer day and got all kinds of asphalt bits embedded in my feet that took a long time to get out. OUCH
 
I once ran on a road on a hot Summer's day where someone had tried to repair the potholes with bitumen. It was quite a shock to suddenly sink into the road. I wonder what people thought when they saw my footprint :)

this winter I went to the mountains for few days
the thermometer was saying -6°c,
but no wind no clouds, it was a very dry and sunny day,
dry was the asphalt too, and so warm, soooooooo good for the feet
 
My most memorable steps were on cool packed alluvial clay on nearby river bottoms bike trails.

My go-to surface are the good asphalt pedestrian trails of Valley Forge National Park, which is right around the corner from me and is my favourite place in all but the hottest months. I'm lucky to be able to run out my front door and within a couple minutes be on a lovely, high quality asphalt trail that connects to a system running all the way from Philadelphia 30 miles south to a park 35 miles north of me.

My most hated, as in "never again!" was a set of paths laid through a nearby park that they maintain by running a mower through a few times a season. What makes them horrible is that the stuff they mow is lots of wild rose and the thorns compete with the sprout spikes to damage my feet. They punctured my Vibrams!
