Yah, I know, sorry, I was just trying to make a quip. Still, I bet he's pretty good barefoot too.

Hey, I haven't been going through the massive links on this thread, but a great exercise for developing the arches and toe spring, that I've only recently started doing again, are bench hops, barefoot of course.

I think that Chong Xie's "hyper arch mechanism" as he concieves it, is closer to hammer toes, rather than short foot.

Is that a photo showing a good hyper arch or a bad set of hammer toes Sid? Either way it's put me off the whole idea! I tried running on the treadmill tonight with my glutes engaged, up on my toes with them scrunched up like in short foot. The only thing I noticed was that my cadence increased

I have Sid. I have had many discussions with Chiong about this. I'm still curious, but not enough to buy his book

Well, since you are curious, you may wish to review this series of posts with links to information from The Gait Guys, Dr. Allen and Dr. Waerlop. I've found them to be immensely informative. Then, revisit Chong Xie's "theories".

No clue really. If I actually knew what I was doing, it wouldn't have taken me 4 years to transition! :D

I've just organized some of the materials that I've found to be useful. Barefoot TJ always wanted a librarian, so I guess she finally has one (sort of).
 
I still think he has something, but I don't think it helps for anything more than a very short sprint, which they do in basketball, where he is targeting his 'secret.'

I do keep trying it occasionally and it does make your legs feel stronger ... for a while. I can only maintain it for a minute or so.

Try doing short foot while you are running and see what you think.

You are right though Sid. It is completely ass-backwards to everything we're told to do for barefoot running. Which is why I don't think it is of use to me.

i heard him or read him clearly stating he's not a runner. an athlete maybe but not a runner.

Just because one can feel muscles activating, doesn't mean that it's proper technique for running. There's a difference between explosive power required for team sports vs. the more relaxed tension of endurance sports.

Well, I stumbled upon this hyperarch stuff just couple of weeks ago and since I'm bit injured (but still running) I have been watching his videos and doing those exercises. There's plenty of new videos so probably the concept is now better explained than when this thread was active last time. And there's even running stuff.

Point of curling the toes was not really about toes, but making the hyperarch, which is kind of abstract concept. It's kinda same as extending the toes, since you point the toe upwards, but then curl them at the next joint/joints.

I'm starting to feel it at the glutes when doing those exercises. Not much, but more than at the beginning, it is supposed to take few weeks. Doing those toe exercises is bit more motivating than doing usual physical therapy stuff - you can do them while doing something else, there's clear goal what to gain from doing them and atleast in theory it could work better than normal PT stuff, which is just isolated exercises and I'm bit sceptical those have much effect on how I run. And in PT stuff there just isn't so clear goal, do them until...?

In these videos there's probably bit more explained...
