Winter Challenge - 2013

I gotta get a weather station at home. When I run, I use the temp and windchill from Dunkirk, NY - 500 feet lower than me and on Lake Erie. Today for my 5k it was 36/26...felt more like 33/18 to me. That wind had 10 miles of snow to cross before it got to me.

What's the member's screen name from the video? Thanks for the shout-out!

I had my coldest run today at 31 degrees F. I could only go 3 km before my feet were getting numb. My lowest temp. last year was 34 degrees and the year before that was 40 degrees, so my tolerance seems to be improving. I went to record my run tonight though and can't find my name on the winter challenge list. Maybe I deleted it by mistake. Luckily I've only had 3 runs so far which qualified for the list and my memory can handle that. I'll repost.

So disappointed right now, absolutely awesome running weather for this challenge and I have notta to show for it. Haven't ran since last Wed, which is driving me crazy. Note to self, next tattoo shall be scheduled for a time when training, winter barefoot running, racing or just pleasure running is not going to happen. Hmmm, if that is the case, I may never get another tattoo. Damn it must rethink this. By the way got a awesome new running related tattoo. Very happy with it but definitely not recommending a tattoo on the inside of your leg (upper thigh) if you don't want to take a week to two off. :shifty:

They're gaining .... USA is only 50km behind the Canucks

I had to pass on running today, as work got in the way .. Damn it's just not right that I haven't won the lottery so I could retire and run everyday. Maybe Vanessa and Shacky have the right idea.

We 'mericans actually paid the NSA to sneak an agent into the tattoo parlor and place some time-delayed poison in the ink. We want to win at all costs you know, and every national sport gets a world champion title.

Butt seriously, this is the price you pay for being a middle-aged hipster. I'm just hoping the whole tattoo craze is over by the time my kids are teenagers.

Some of us definitely deserve to be independently wealthy, no doubt about it.

I've been using accuweather for my windchill readings, but there's sometimes a pretty big discrepancy between their 'now' measurement and their 'hourly' measurement for the same time.

Got a bunch of new Icebreaker Merino wool gear, bring on the big chill!
Well I just put up my first cold barefoot run in the spreadsheet. It felt good, I think one lady in the park thought I was crazy.
Let's face it, we are a little crazy. It's not just outsiders' misperception. Way to go in any case, welcome to the club!

Well finished my last big barefoot run last night before the balance of the snow dumping came down overnight. Over half of a half marathon (12 km) barefoot and the rest done in my Luna's. It was awesome to run through the freshly falling snow and making tracks as I went. Had to pull out the Luna's for the limestone paths, just to much cold grit. But the single track barefoot was awesome for sure.

Holy crap, what happened to our lead. Come on boys and girls we need to build that back up again. To bad I lost a week of good running weather. Oh well, back at it.

Okay, I think I have my first qualifying miles. 12 miles dry S2G, was 36°F when I started and 41° when I finished. How do you handle that when the temp goes up during a run. Does it count in my favor that there was a cold breeze? :coldfeet: Took 3 miles for my feet to completely warm up, but since I could tell they were making progress, and I had left my Luna's in my husband's car, I went ahead barefoot the whole way. What do I do now? Is there some chart I need to fill in?

You can go to accuweather to get a windchill reading.

For entering the chart go back to page one, the first of YOW's posts.

If there's a dramatic warm-up or cool down on longer runs, and I change 5-degree qualifying categories, I usually split the run into two parts. But I rarely check the temp/windchill both before and after a run, so whatever the reading is when I check, either before or after, is the one I use.

Oh crap Bob ... They've gone and done it. The US has pulled into the lead. In one day they made up 70km. Welcome to the gang HappySongBird and Blonde Brownie. Impressive first runs!
