What beer are you drinking tonight? For the new forum...

At least beer has some nutritional value.
The same people that say the problem with beer is that it is just empty calories also recommend having a bagel for breakfast. Never mind that the typical coffee/bagel chain store bagel has 350 OR MORE calories of carbs + fat (REAL bagels are only 250 KCAL and contain no added fat) and the typical beer has 150 calories of carbs w/ no fat per 12 oz. serving.
Beer as a carb source is the same as any other grain based foods.........only with value added!

My 22oz bottles that I usually get, when not buying a sixer, are usually around $5. I did see one the other day that was $15 but I don't remember what it was. I had grabbed it and was about to go buy it when I noticed the cost and I dang near dropped it out of shock. Of course I instanty put it back.

Willie, I'm curious, I am not a big Lowenbrau fan at all.

Na, man, the stuff is industrial brew for mass market and export. That's what I was getting at. I only used it as an example of the kind of beer tourists here would generally be drinking, and unfortunately thinking that's what beer here is like. There are a lot of other, similar beers, but they're probably not familiar to most people in this thread.

Ah ok. Whats a good type of German beer Willie? We do get some imports and while I don't know that we will have the exact same beer as you we should have some of the same styles if you will. I have tried some but it seems to taste similar to the lowenbrau which I am really not a fan of, at all....

refer to the image I posted earlier, Nick :D

I don't think you'll see any good German beer in the stores. Maybe if there's some kind of specialty importer, but even then, beer destined for export overseas is prepared differently. There's an excellent, really excellent brewery nearby in a town called 'Schederndorf', their beer is really something special. We can only buy it in kegs at the brewery, they don't bottle at all. They do, however, export to some 'Oktoberfests' in the USA. My bud at the local beverage store told me about it. But, as I said, it isn't the same beer. Beer here doesn't generally last long, lol.

Btw, you won't find any of the 'world's best beers' in Germany. Not if the World Championships are a guide to the best of the best. The 'best' beers are always very small-production, gourmet items, and they cost a fortune. I think the micro-brews in the US are comparable to the small brewery beers that I enjoy here. Once the quality of a beer reaches a certain level, they're all good and it's only a matter of preference and taste.

For some people, they don't stop at one or two beers and come into my office talking about how they are drinking a case a night of Bud Light for the nutritional effects. To me, that is a little overboard.

Then again, some people can't stop with one or two bagels.....

What I was getting at is people who say there is no room in a healthy diet for beer because it is just "empty calories" void of any nutrition, while those same people eat a 350-500 calorie "bagel" (not really a bagel because there is added fat and they have'nt been boiled before baking) and think of it as nutritious.
Of course they also eat muffins but never cake, and when they do eat cake it doesn't count because it is either bannana cake or carrot cake.

I have a clear memory of a 'nutritionist' telling Larry King to leave the cream cheese off his breakfast bagel and have it with just the jelly. In reality, the bagel and the jelly were (are) both more fattening than the cream cheese.

That was back in the all fat is evil days, and when carbs were your base on the food pyramid.
Best bet would probably be to skip the jelly and use reduced fat cream cheese or humus instead.....OR, whatever makes you happy and content enough to stop over eating as long as your total caloric intake for the day is about your average that maintains an acceptable proportion of body fat for you. Plenty of room to splurge, a long as you balance your account each week!

Looks like I came back to the thread at the wrong time. I have but myself on a "beer diet" lately and have reduced my consumption in an effort to lose some of my winter fat. No running = no beer. No way I going cold turkey though and occasional cheat is fine in my book.

Last weekend I tried two Epic beers (www.epicbrewing.com), the Spiral Jetty IPA and the Cross Fever Amber Ale. Both really good, full of flavor. We are starting to get some really good brewers here in Utah. Also been happy with the Uinta, Red Rock, and Moab brews.

Gotcha. For me, it is a matter of doing things in moderation. (Sometimes easier said than done)

And drinking to excess with that explanation is something that I hear from clients... The logic isn't always there, what can I say? Another example would be someone who told me that he was gaining too much weight drinking beer and they were going to kick him out of the military. So he switched to drinking a fifth a night of hard liquor. I looked up the calories and he was consuming about 2000 calories on liquor alone.

If you really want to be his enabler recommend Bud Light Platinum. 6% ABV while only 137 calories per 12 oz serving. He can become a skinny alcoholic just like those in the street!
At least they don't die from heart disease, their fat free diet and liver damaged high HDL levels protect them.
Too bad Cirrhosis does them in.

I think enabling him/them would get me in trouble... ;) I'm a social worker/ substance abuse counselor for the Army. Recently I've had a couple of people claiming they had no idea Bud Light Platinum had more alcohol in it. I'm convinced that I've heard it all......

ugh, there are a few like that here. You can observe the changes. First they become bloated and red-faced but then then get scrawny. And they seem to be indestructible. Never sick. They also seem to live forever. Huh.

By 'here' I'm talking about my neighborhood.

It's proudly displayed in big numbers on the front of the bottle!

They probably just LOOK old but die by 55.

You're a lucky man Willie!

Old Speckled Hen for me today, two of them, one each for Wales-Scotland and Ireland-France in the 6-Nations rugby.
