Some of my digital sculpture

What software do you use? My Mom would love to give this a try. She dabbles with scan art, fractals, pencil drawing, and sculpture.

Oh - I cannot believe that this is just your hobby. This is absolutely wonderful. I can barely draw stick people.

It would also be nice to here about others non running related passions, skills, pass times.
My pass times are more mundane: gardening, sewing, singing, and writing. Maybe I'll post some pix of my garden for you come spring. If my friends and I ever get done with the rocknroll song I wrote my husband for his birthday, I'll post a link to that. As far as sewing, I've been making my girl friends and family some fun bags/purses. And I do have fun writing on my blog.

He is SO cute! Thanks so much! Hee looks a little on the cold side; I think he would warm up with a BRS sweat shirt! Hee!

Outstanding! Why are you not working for Pixar? I like the dog, especially - it has a Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County, Outland, Opus) quality to it

If i had the choice it wouldn't be Pixar that I would work for, it would be Aardman studio of Wallace and Gromitt fame, the thought of building cartoon characters out of plasticine for a living really does appeal to the big kid in me that never grew up.

For barefoot Pooch I'm using Blender a free open source 3d animation package. For much of the sculpture I use Zbrush (not free) and a Wacom tablet but blender also has sculpting functionality.

Here's a link to blender

Be aware that you need a fairly good spec computer to run this stuff.

See, that's what make us all unique, I only have to look at a plant and It dies, green fingers didn't seem to figure in my gene pool. Sounds like you've got lots of interests to keep that songbird chirping :)

Is this warm enough T.J. I know It's not the official T Shirt design but when you're dealing with strange shaped characters there always needs to be a compromise.

Remarkable!! Awesome work indeed!
Keep posting whenever you have new work.

This is awesome!
We have some truly remarkable members here at BRS.
This is exciting to see develop!

BRS Barefoot Pooch! I am IN LOVE with him! He is adorable! And the shirt is perfect. We have several logos, and that's basically like one of them, so all's good anyway. Will you be adding fur? If so, what color? Will he have short hair or long hair? I am so tickled. THANK YOU! We will have to find a way to add him to the header on the site!

Glad you like him T.J.
I may do a single render with fur at a later stage but it's only really worth it for large images and can cause all sorts of problems if you want to remove the background.
Color wise I was thinking black and white, now I've got is ears twisted over and in the proper position he's beginning to look like a Dalmatian and less like a helicopter.
I like the idea of one black paw for asymmetry, the good thing about working in 3D is that everything is flexible once the base mesh is complete, unlike a traditional 2D painting.
The base mesh is now one object, with the exception of the eyes, I'll unwrap him and sort the proper textures out in the morning.

Very cool. I love his ears, now and before, helicopter or not.

I've finished the pelting. Much the same process of skinning any fury critter without the gooey mess. Make some cuts remove the fur and flatten it out, so i'm afraid Barefoot Pooch is feeling a bit like road kill at the moment until I can find some time to paint the textures to project back onto him ;)
This is called a U.V. map and can now be taken into any 2D image editing program for painting.

That is incredible! I had no idea that's how you guys did that stuff. Really neat.

Here's another update, lots of tweaking going on, but I've got the characters weight now, by that I don't mean size but more how he's grounded, he's beginning to feel plausible now.
I'm keeping the textures simple and inline with the BRS forum type colors, much like barefoot running simple is best:) .
Next up is rigging, which involves building an internal skeleton that can be bound to the mesh. It will be made from an armature of 'bones' and once complete I'll be able to pose him by selecting say the arm bones and rotating them.

Love the green toe nail polish! Hee! I love him. And of course we must have a black eye. That's for "taking it on the chin" from the shoddies. Oh, and I just noticed the blue eyes! So cute!

Here's a screen grab of Barefoot Pooch with skeleton and in a simple pose looking relaxed starting out on his first half. Still got to do some work on the rigging, eyes etc, but he's starting come alive.
Character rigging is something I'm not that familiar with but am enjoying the technical challenges, of which there are many ;)

Lol T.J, it seems painted toe nails are a right of passage these days, so i thought I'd get Barefoot Pooch fully initiated into the community;) Glad you like him :)

At least you don't have him heel striking! Ha! To go with the toe nail polish, how about putting some huaraches on him or VFFs...later, of course...that would be really cute. And then maybe a kilt. Make him a total wannabe. Ha!
