The husband ran barefoot in secret the other day! 1/4 mile on the old railroad track thingy by our house! He didn't want to hear the nagging...can't imagine why??? Lol.

He tried to run on WW for a 1/4 mile also, but it was too gravely.

So yesterday we went for a 2 hour hike at Multnomah Falls and he wore my Moc3s the whole time.

And he has decided to start training for the Portland Marathon and he is going to do it MINIMALIST!!!

Oh and for those looking on how to encourage their spouses to go barefoot. You need a reward system. The rewards can be...anything. ;)

Those rewards don't work for me, missy!

Congrats on breaking down the hubby though!

I have a similar "success story:"

For as long as I can remember, my wife has said that she just "isn't a runner." And while I've always believed that, barring a physical condition, most everyone CAN run, I've never nagged her about it. Just not her thing, I figured, and that was that.

When I took up this barefoot thing, to my surprise, she wanted to accompany me to Ken Bob's running workshop. She must have her reasons, so I didn't object. When we both realized that my years of shod running gave me absolutely no advantage when it came to this new sport, I guess her interest was piqued. She began to make noises that sounded a lot like "I think I'll give this a try."

Since that time (early September) she's been running a bit, either barefoot or in XeroShoes (which she asked me to order for her after she saw mine). She's probably up to about a mile now, not continuously, but hey, she's doing it. We're signed up for this month's local Turkey Trot, and it remains to be seen if she'll do it shod or minimalist, but I'm just thrilled that she's doing it at all.

Can I guess what her motivation is? Nope. I offered no reward beyond simply starting off on relatively equal footing, so to speak. Whatever the motivation, I'm here to say that they do come around, from time to time, but, as Jen also noticed, on their own terms. Whatever. It just makes me smile.

I had another first on this morning's run, but I'm too verbose to condense it. It's on my blog, listed in the signature, if anyone's interested. Just one of those moments that demonstrate how the universe opens up in unexpected ways sometimes.

Cheers!

Ahh...rewards through submission. Very good. Just remember to loosen the zip-ties so he can regain blood flow to his wrists and ankles...

Or at least his ankles, since his feet are attached there. :D

I don't have much advice here... I run to get away! Ha!

Well - it sounds like he's gonna need to scrub them with a Scotchbrite pad and some soap after you're done with him...

Between the zip ties and the scotchbrite pads, I bet you spend a small fortune at Grainger...

ThomDavid- sometimes I don't like to new physical activities like challenging hikes or biking or whatever with my hubby because, while he is the best hubby ever, I am genetically inferior and he has really good genes and is really fit and strong, despite eating like crap and not really exercising (although he has a physical job). It is very very hard for me to keep up with what he considers an easy pace and I don't really like to say so, so good for your wife.

Hubby and I don't run together. Sometimes I chase him for short distances or run away from him to get back to the car first or because he's being a weirdo but that doesn't really count.:p

We went on a trail run on Wildwood today - me, Mike, Chris and David (husband). David wore my Moc3s. He said the insides do not slip at all, but that the few muddy areas were super slippery. They have tread, but it is not deep tread. And since it isn't really wet at all, yet...they probably will not work long term. Now he is going to join here and start reading about all the footwear options. Muah-ha-haaa!!!

Hah! And the husband has been officially initiated by hearing Mike's infamous, "You're pushing off." ;)

Spouse has one leg that's been partially disfunctional since she was about 1 year old, and would rather teach cats to dance than try to run at all. SO sub 2, however, is a once and future runner who both encourages me mightily and has aspiration to run with me when she gets some relatively minor physical issues behind her. i don't need to encourage her at all. I'd like to figure out a good way to get my kids out on the trail with me. Maybe if I told them it was illegal or otherwise verboten?

Lol. How old are your kids? I have plans to start a kids group out here next summer. Was a little late this year cuz it's probably to rainy and muddy for whiners. Uh, I mean, children. :D
