Skip Orem Interviews Barefoot Ken Bob on Get Fit Pod Episode 153

Barefoot Ken Bob on the Get Fit PodOn My podcast this week I interviewed special guestBarefoot Ken BobasI concludedmy Get Fit Podlook at barefoot running. The podcast also contains; a mini-High Intensity Interval Training Workout, a newbreak item on high protien-low carb diets, and my future plans for barefoot running, which I've indicated below and also posted on my blog at Get Fit Pod getfitpodpodcast.com/: (Please let me know what you think)

With the release of Get Fit Pod Episode number 153 (9.19.10) and the interview with Barefoot Ken Bob, we will have completed two consecutive episodes on the subject of barefoot running. I have heavily researched the subject, including running barefoot myself, for the past several months.

Here are my personal thoughts and plans; I am not, in any way, suggesting that you do the same thing. First of all I encourage you to read a good blog post on barefoot running which was written by my friend, Beth, who has started running barefoot. And, please visit the Barefoot Runners Society to hook up with some other barefoot runners.

I'm a little intimidated writing this and sharing it on this week's podcast. The podcast, featuring Barefoot Ken Bob will probably be one of our most listened to Get Fit Pod episodes, ever. Most of those additional listeners will be barefoot runners.

I was attracted to running, as an adult, 30 years ago, because of the freedom it offered. Anyone, seasoned athlete, or former couch potato is free to begin running. You can run anywhere you want, any time of the day you want, and with whatever kind of equipment, ie., shoes, apparel or no shoes, and I guess no apparel. Running is freedom in so many ways.

Istarted running in a Sears private label brand of Chuck Taylor All-Stars which I had used in high school gym class. It doesn't matter what you run in, just that you run and enjoy the experience and freedom.

Ifyou want to experiment with barefoot running. Ifyou want to become a barefoot runner. If you just want to know more about barefoot running. Then you need to listen to the advice you will get from Barefoot Ken Bob, in his interview onthe September 19th episode of Get Fit Pod (#153). I totally agree with everything he says, and everything mentioned by Wendy Nail, on how to start running barefoot. There are tremendous advantages to running barefoot.

Just recently duringmy personal barefoot running experience I learned both from Wendy Nail and Barefoot Ken Bob, that I had started the entire process wrong. Don't let that happen to you.

What do I think about barefoot running? Based on the research I've done and some miles with barefoot running, here is how I plan to change the way I run.

I buy intoall of the advantages of barefoot running. I just do not like to run barefoot. It is not comfortable for me. Personally I prefer to run in shoes. It's just a personal preference; I want something between the souls of my feet and the surface they land on.

I have, based on my brief sojourn into barefoot running, made a changein how I will do my running workouts in the future.I've discovered that Ienjoy running in minimalist shoes and I've said good-bye to my Mizuno Wave Riders and orthotic inserts. I'm currently using Nike Frees.

I don't like the look of Vibram Five Fingers. However, I am going to experiment with different types of minimalist running shoes.

The second part of my running change is that I will continue to do barefoot intervals on grass. These will probably be a series of 100 meter speed/rest intervals as part of my regular running program.

Running is Freedom and I've made a free choice!

That's my plan going forward. I consider myself a barefoot runner, since I will be continuing to use it moderately in my training.

My final words on barefoot running – I wish I enjoyed it, I don't, I prefer shoes. You are free to make your own choice, but please heed the advice of Wendy Nail and Barefoot Ken Bob and start out doing it correctly.

Just a side note, during these barefoot running episodes, the book, Born to Run by Chris McDougal was mentioned by both of our guests. I've read and loved it. I highly recommend it. -Skip
