Our first 5k race

My 8 years old son Marcus and I have been running to school since the beginning of 2014. After awhile I thought it will be fun if we both train and run a 5k race together. Marcus has good natural running form but like most kids need to work on his stamina. We have been averaging a mile to school 5 days a week, and I tried to have him to do a longer run on the weekends. My goal is to run the 5k race on barefoot, for Marcus is to finish the race comfortably under 40 minutes.
We found a charity race Kids 4 Kids RUN/WALK which benefits the Children's Cancer Research fund, and created a fundraising page for Marcus for donations. I was happy to see Marcus so motivated every time he received a new donation, and he seemed to run faster during our morning run to school. After 2 months of training we were both ready for the 5k race.

Since this is my first race ever I wanted to stay in the middle or back of the pack, but Marcus somehow pulled us to the front of the starting line. The people at the front line looked ready and serious, but Marcus had no fear standing here, hands in the pocket with a smile.

Marcus and I were able to keep at our pace. The energy and atmosphere had lifted Marcus spirit so much that he didn't take any walk break. We finished under 32 minutes which brought a big smile to this face. After training barefoot for a few months I'm getting more comfortable running longer distance. There were a few awkward stares but I was able to strike up a few good conversations on barefoot running. This has been a good experience for us both and I'm sure there will be many more races to come.
