OUCH !

I'm in the same boat. It will be my first winter running and Iwould like to know how to keep my feet from hurting in cold weather.

This will be my first winter barefoot as well, and I'll tell you this: I'll be wearing VFFs for most of it. Iwent on a longer run yesterday and it was only mid to lower 50's but my feet got numb midway. Not pleasant. Not being able to feel my feet made it so I couldn't keep my foot strike consistant, which impacted my form quite a bit. The concrete really sucked the heat from my feet.

Maybe that's why you took a spill in the first place? I could tell that I was more clumsy when my feet were cold. I'm definitely getting VFFs this weekend, Ifeel comfortable doing so because I've really started to nail down my barefoot form, so I think that I'll be alright in the VFFs. We'll see. Good luck to both of you this winter!

I'm no doctor but if you feet are getting numb when the temps are in the 50's there's something else going on besides cold, even on concrete. Was it windy or was there other factors that could have contributed? Numb in the 50's ain't good. Just my unedumicated opinion.

Iagree, I found it strange as well. It was pretty breezy, but I wouldn't say that can account for what I experienced. Don't get me wrong, they weren't NUMB numb... they just... weren't all there... ha. I don't know. I'll have to test it a bit.

Here's a good test to make sure your feet are OK; put 3oz. of a good IPA in a bowl and put your foot next to it. If your toes curl in excitement you're good, if not, go see a doc pronto!

What if I find that I can't even pour it into the bowl, my mouth keeps getting in the way... But once inside me my feet curl in excitement that's for sure!

I have been running in the high 40's and low 50's lately and noticed that my toes come and go through the run. It's interesting to notice "ah, heere are left foot 2nd and third back again!" The lower temps are much easier to acclimate to with my VFF Bikilas. I feel a bit of a wuss, but a running wuss! Trails have been better than pavement for me, too. Even going through wet stretches hasn't been too bad with the VFF's. It's all good!

JosephTree, knowing that I'm not the only one with this issue gives me some solace. Thanks for sharing. Although I am sorry that you share my discomfort in such weather. Ijust got a pair of VFF Bikilas myself, so I guess I'll be running in those until Spring. Ilike them quite a bit, although I miss running barefoot. Maybe after next summer I'll have enough conditioning to make it a bit further into the Fall/Winter.
